Chapter 6
Overview
Peter goes to the Garda station and secures Naomi's release after her arrest during the squat eviction, then brings her back to his apartment. Over a meal and frank conversation, they acknowledge their mutual failings in communication and the unspoken depth of their connection. Peter invites Naomi to stay with him indefinitely, marking a significant shift in their relationship from casual and guarded to something more openly caring and vulnerable, even as Peter keeps his deeper anguish—his grief, his entanglement with Sylvia, his despair—unspoken.
Summary
Peter takes a taxi to Kevin Street Garda station after learning from Janine that Naomi has been arrested. On the ride over, he questions why he continues this relationship, noting Naomi's chaotic life and his own ambivalence. At the station, he encounters a dismissive Garda behind Plexiglass and leverages his professional presence—well-spoken, suited—to inquire about Naomi's arrest. Despite not being her solicitor, he presses for information about the charges and implies he can call one. Shortly after, Naomi is released without charge, walking down the corridor with a torn knee, scraped and bleeding from being dragged by a security guard during the eviction.
Outside the station, Peter is filled with rage at the Garda's parting remark—"It's your lucky day"—but Naomi tells him not to make a scene. As they walk, she explains that a security guard dragged her up the stairs, her phone was confiscated while she was filming, and most of her belongings were thrown into the street. She has only her wallet, prescriptions, and some clothes. Peter offers to let her stay at his apartment, and after some teasing resistance, she agrees. In the taxi, Peter reflects on her lack of family support—her absent father, her alcoholic mother—and worries she's only coming with him out of desperation.
At Peter's apartment, which has been empty for days while he stayed at Sylvia's, Naomi immediately notices he hasn't been sleeping there and asks if he's been staying with Sylvia. Peter confirms it awkwardly, and Naomi asks if they're back together. He deflects, saying Sylvia's feelings aren't her business. The tension eases as Peter cooks French toast, bacon, and coffee. Over the meal, they have an honest conversation: Peter apologizes for being out of touch and admits he hasn't been feeling or behaving well. Naomi acknowledges he's grieving his father but tells him he needs to communicate better. She's pleased to learn that Sylvia knows about their relationship, having assumed Peter was hiding her.
After eating, Naomi asks to lie down, and Peter follows her to the bedroom. They have sex that is tender and emotionally charged. Naomi repeatedly offers total submission—"you can do whatever you want"—but Peter chooses gentleness, aware of the trauma she's just endured. Naomi tells him she feels safe with him, and Peter reassures her. He reflects on her irrepressible love of life despite having no job, no family support, no fixed address, and no money to finish college—and on the systems that seem designed to break her.
Afterward, lying together, Peter asks Naomi to stay at his apartment for a while, and she quietly accepts. He feels a powerful urge to confess everything—his grief, his fear of losing both her and Sylvia, his suicidal mornings—but decides silence is enough. He tells her he has to teach a class and offers her his spare keys and cash. Before leaving, they share a wordless mutual understanding. Naomi thanks him, and he kisses her forehead.
