23. We Say Good-bye, Sort Of
Overview
In the aftermath of the war, Camp Half-Blood begins changing to honor Percy’s bargain with the gods: more demigods are claimed, new cabins are built, and Grover’s satyrs search the world for half-bloods. Percy receives a quiet thank-you from Poseidon and joins the camp in memorializing those who died defending Olympus.
The summer ends with goodbyes that are not entirely final: Rachel leaves for school as the new Oracle, Annabeth remains near New York and Percy, and the two look toward an uncertain prophecy about seven half-bloods. The chapter closes the immediate story with peace and hope while leaving the next danger unresolved.
Summary
Camp Half-Blood remains open for two extra weeks, giving Percy a happy end to the summer after the war. The gods begin keeping their promise to claim their children, and Grover organizes satyr seekers across the world to find new demigods. As more campers arrive and more children are claimed, the Hermes cabin becomes less crowded and the camp prepares for a much larger future.
Percy and Grover rest by the canoe lake and look over the expanding camp. New cabins for Hades, Iris, Nemesis, Hecate, and other gods are under construction, with Nico using undead builders and Tyson leading Cyclopes on delicate magical work. Grover warns that his duties to the Wild and to unclaimed half-bloods will keep him traveling, but Percy assures Grover that their friendship will not change.
Later, Poseidon visits Percy privately at the beach. Poseidon thanks Percy for his choices during the war, saying even the gods have learned from what happened, then casually catches and releases a sea serpent while fishing. Poseidon jokes that he may claim more of his children and send Percy some siblings, then leaves Percy with a cryptic reminder to know which fish are big enough to land.
On the final night, the campers hold the bead ceremony. The new bead shows the Empire State Building and bears the names of the heroes who died defending Olympus. Chiron praises the camp’s bravery and friendship, and Percy notices Hestia quietly tending the fire, unseen by everyone else.
The next morning, Percy and Annabeth watch campers leave from Half-Blood Hill. Rachel says goodbye before heading to Clarion Academy, nervous about balancing ordinary school with being the Oracle, while Annabeth is staying in New York to attend boarding school and help oversee Olympus’s rebuilding. Annabeth and Percy acknowledge their closeness without truly saying goodbye.
Percy asks whether Annabeth has been thinking about Rachel’s new prophecy. Annabeth worries about the seven half-bloods, storm or fire, and foes at the Doors of Death, though Percy suggests it may be a problem for another generation. Despite the unease, Percy feels hopeful with Annabeth beside him, races her down the hill, and for once does not look back.
