CHAPTER 5: THE WHITE RIDER
Overview
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli track the hobbits into Fangorn and confront a hooded stranger who reveals himself as Gandalf reborn as the White Rider. Gandalf explains the larger war, hints at the Ents’ awakening, and recounts his battle with the Balrog. Summoning Shadowfax, he leads them to ride for Edoras to aid Théoden.
Summary
At dawn in Fangorn’s eaves, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli resume tracking the captured hobbits. They find a mallorn-leaf with lembas crumbs, cut cords, and an orc-knife, deducing a hobbit freed his hands and slipped away unseen under an elven-cloak. Following light prints to the forest, they press inward despite Gimli’s misgivings and Legolas’s sense of watchful anger in the woods.
Climbing Treebeard’s Hill, they spy a ragged old man. Gimli urges Legolas to shoot, but Aragorn stays his hand. The stranger stills their weapons with a word, casts off his grey rags, and stands revealed in white: it is Gandalf returned. He assures them their weapons cannot harm him and that the tide has turned, then asks for their tale.
After hearing of Boromir’s death and the chase, Gandalf outlines the Enemy’s misread intentions, Saruman’s treachery, and the Nazgûl’s new winged mounts. He reveals Merry and Pippin met Treebeard, whose wrath is waking the Ents against Isengard. He counsels that hope is not victory and redirects their quest: they must ride to Edoras to aid Théoden, for war is upon Rohan.
Pressed for his own tale, Gandalf briefly recounts falling with the Balrog into the deeps, pursuing it up the Endless Stair, casting it down from Zirakzigil, dying, and being sent back. He was healed and clothed in white in Lothlórien and brings Galadriel’s messages to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli.
Leaving the forest, Gandalf summons the horses. Shadowfax arrives with Hasufel and Arod. Gandalf mounts with Gimli, assigning the others their steeds. Steering south across the Eastemnet without roads, they ride hard toward Meduseld and see war-smoke by the Gap of Rohan as they hasten to Théoden.
