Epilogue

Overview

In the epilogue, Elm publicly reshapes Blunder after the mist’s fall, turning the kingdom toward openness, refuge, and choice instead of secrecy and fear. On spring Equinox, Elm and Ione marry, symbolically uniting the surviving circle of friends and family after the violence of the previous reign. Elspeth, free of the Nightmare yet still marked by Taxus, accepts both her losses and her agency, ending the story by naming herself the author of Blunder’s twisted tale.

Summary

Elm, now styling himself the King of Elms, submits the truth to the Chalice and announces it to Blunder: Hauth Rowan committed regicide and ended Quercus Rowan’s reign. With the mist gone after Solstice, Elm declares Blunder’s borders open, offers the Shepherd Card at Castle Yew to infected people who want a cure, turns Stone into a refuge, and promises safety to those who wish to keep their fever-born magic. He also reframes The Old Book of Alders as Blunder’s twisted history rather than immutable law, while warning that the Spirit of the Wood still watches.

On spring Equinox, Castle Yew’s bells ring through a Blunder no longer muffled by mist. Elspeth, wearing her mother’s red dress, waits beneath a yew tree until Ravyn appears with a Mirror Card and confirms that everyone is gathered. Ravyn comforts Elspeth, and they go to Hawthorn House, where Elspeth reunites with family and friends amid celebration, nerves, flowers, and tears.

Elm and Ione marry at Hawthorn House. Ravyn stands beside Elm, while Elspeth stands beside Ione, and the gathered guests openly weep. When Filick gives them their gold bands, Elm vows to love Ione for a hundred years and beyond; Ione interrupts the formality by kissing him, drawing cheers. The couple emerges as King and Queen of Blunder while the guests throw yellow irises in honor of Elspeth’s mother and Elm’s preference.

After the ceremony, Ione embraces Elspeth and tells her that none of this might have happened without her. The wedding party walks the forest road toward town, and Elspeth reflects on how much has changed since her nameday, when she first met Ravyn and Elm as highwaymen. The forest is brighter and wilder without the mist, and Elspeth feels at home in its untamed growth.

Elspeth briefly thinks she sees Taxus’s yellow eyes in the trees, but the vision is only sunlight through a rotted log. Ravyn waits for her and jokes about the day Elspeth knocked him down, then kisses her. Elspeth notes that Ravyn chose not to use the Shepherd Card to cure himself after destroying the final Scythe Card, because he wants to keep his magic and a private connection to what happened in the alderwood. Though the Nightmare is gone, Taxus’s imprint remains in Elspeth’s mind, and Elspeth recognizes that she has become more than the girl, the king, and the monster of Blunder’s tale: she is its author.
