Chapter 6
Overview
The Guild embassy arrives at Paul’s court, and Edric presents a dangerous “gift”: Hayt, a Tleilaxu ghola made from Duncan Idaho’s body and trained as a Zensunni mentat. Paul recognizes that Hayt is bait meant to exploit his debt and affection for Duncan, yet he accepts him because he cannot dismiss Duncan’s living form and voice.
The chapter deepens the conspiracy’s pressure on Paul by placing its weapon inside his household while also revealing the limits of Paul’s prescience, clouded by Edric, the tarot, and other oracular forces. Alia’s fascination with Hayt adds a personal vulnerability to the political and metaphysical trap.
Summary
Alia watches secretly from above the great reception hall as the Guild embassy enters Paul’s court. The Guildsmen surround Edric, the Steersman-Ambassador, whose tank glides before the Lion Throne. Alia and Paul both recognize the orange-robed attendant at the front of the delegation: the man has Duncan Idaho’s body, voice, and manner, though Duncan died saving Paul.
Edric presents his credentials and then explains the “gift.” The man is called Hayt, a Tleilaxu ghola regrown from Duncan Idaho’s dead flesh, fitted with metal eyes, and trained as a mentat and Zensunni philosopher. Paul’s truth-sense suggests Edric believes the identification, but Paul also recognizes the Tleilaxu nature of the offering and suspects danger hidden in the recreated body.
Paul questions Hayt before the court. Hayt says he has no certain memory of Duncan Idaho’s life, only genetic patterns and emotional “niches” that respond to familiar voices, places, skills, and names. Hayt’s answers are calm, philosophical, and unsettlingly honest. Paul chooses to keep the Tleilaxu name Hayt rather than call him Duncan Idaho, because the name itself warns of peril.
After dismissing Edric’s embassy, Paul announces that Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam has been removed from the Guild ship by Paul’s order, making her presence a future subject of discussion with Edric. Stilgar urges Paul in Chakobsa to send Hayt away, insisting Duncan is dead and the ghola should be treated as an abomination. Paul refuses and instead orders Stilgar to guard Mohiam carefully with men trained to resist the Voice.
Alone with Hayt and the guards, Paul asks directly how Hayt might destroy him. Hayt answers that the Tleilaxu intend Hayt to do exactly that and advises Paul to send Hayt away. Paul cannot bring himself to reject a being who carries Duncan Idaho’s voice and form, even though Paul knows the gift is bait and a weapon. Paul senses that prescience is clouded by other oracles and by the tarot, leaving the hidden design uncertain.
Paul silently appeals to Alia to investigate Hayt, relying on ordinary spying where prescience fails. Alia accepts the unspoken challenge but feels a disturbing attraction to Hayt’s restored youth and innocence. She recognizes that Hayt is a danger to both her and Paul, yet she wants to be near him.
