Overview

Harry travels to Hogwarts under Ministry escort. Mr Weasley privately urges Harry not to pursue Sirius Black. On the train, a Dementor boards; Harry collapses, and Professor Lupin drives it away and aids the students. At the feast, Dumbledore announces Dementors guarding the grounds, appoints Lupin to Defence Against the Dark Arts, and names Hagrid as the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher.

Summary

Harry departs the Leaky Cauldron with the Weasleys, riding Ministry cars to King’s Cross. At the barrier, Mr Weasley separates Harry to warn him not to seek Sirius Black. Harry rejoins Ron and Hermione on the train, where they find a sleeping adult, Professor R. J. Lupin, presumably the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.

Harry tells Ron and Hermione about Black. Their Pocket Sneakoscope whirs, Crookshanks fixates on Ron’s pocketed Scabbers, and they discuss Hogsmeade, which Harry cannot visit without permission. Malfoy arrives to taunt them but retreats upon seeing Lupin.

The train unexpectedly stops in darkness; Lupin awakens and conjures fire as a towering, hooded Dementor enters. An overwhelming cold engulfs the compartment; Harry collapses, hearing terrified screams. Lupin confronts the Dementor with a silvery charm, driving it out, then distributes chocolate to the shaken students and checks on the driver.

They reach Hogsmeade in heavy rain. At the gates, more Dementors stand guard, unsettling Harry. Malfoy mocks Harry for fainting until Lupin’s presence silences him. Inside, Professor McGonagall pulls Harry and Hermione aside; Madam Pomfrey examines Harry and approves Lupin’s chocolate remedy. Released, they hurry to the feast.

Dumbledore addresses the school: Dementors will guard Hogwarts and students must not leave the grounds. He introduces Professor Lupin as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and announces Hagrid as the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Overjoyed, Harry, Ron, and Hermione congratulate Hagrid before returning to Gryffindor Tower, relieved to be back at school.
