CHAPTER 58
Overview
Golden awakens to Theo’s death, the taped sidewalk becoming a public shrine. Authorities rule his fall accidental, caused by a low balcony rail as he leaned toward the melee below. James Ponder identifies Theo and alerts his circle, while police begin a doubtful search for the attackers.
Summary
By morning, news of Theo’s death spreads along the Promenade and across Golden. Police tape circles the sidewalk where Theo’s body lay, becoming an impromptu shrine as townspeople leave cards and flowers for the “saint of the Promenade.” The public grieves the loss of a man who had carefully guarded his anonymity.
Authorities conclude Theo fell over his balcony’s low rail while leaning to witness the violent assault below. From the street, the sequence seems plausible: Theo leaning in shock toward the Fedder, losing balance, and plunging to the pavement.
On scene, Simone is dazed and responsive; Ellen, bloodied and incoherent, does not grasp Theo’s fate. Neither can provide Theo’s full name, with Simone repeating only, “His name is Theo.” Paramedics tend to them amid confusion and grief.
Simone mentions James Ponder as Theo’s advisor, prompting a night call. Mr. Ponder arrives, identifies Theo, speaks with investigators, and begins notifying those closest to Theo: Asher, Mrs. Gidley, Simone’s parents, Tony, Derrick, Shep and Addie, and Kendrick. He also places calls to New York before preparing for the sorrowful days ahead.
Police open an investigation into the assailants, but the dark, sudden attack and lack of witnesses or cameras temper expectations. Ironically, the nearby “Eye of God” had seen everything, even as official leads are scarce.
