Chapter 27: Jesper

Overview

Jesper and Kaz narrowly escape the prison sector through the incinerator while the Ice Court shifts into Yellow Protocol, forcing the crew to regroup on the embassy roof. Kaz’s private detour to search for Pekka Rollins creates tension and distrust, while Jesper’s hidden Fabrikator ability is exposed to Nina. With extra checkpoints blocking both retreat and access to the White Island, Inej offers a dangerous solution: she and Nina can infiltrate by joining the Menagerie delegation.

Summary

Jesper waits in the incinerator room while the alarm bells ring, fearing that guards will discover the escape route to the roof. Inej has already secured a rope, and Jesper has cleaned away evidence, but Nina arrives without Kaz and climbs up, leaving Jesper torn between waiting for Kaz and protecting the rest of the crew.

Kaz finally bursts in bloodied and disheveled, ordering Jesper to hurry. Jesper climbs the incinerator rope through rain and heat, followed by Kaz, and Matthias and Wylan pull both of them onto the prison roof. The group then uses Inej’s tether and sling to cross to the embassy roof, where Nina is tending Inej’s burned and blistered feet.

Kaz orders Jesper to help remove rubber from Inej’s wounds, forcing Jesper to reveal his Fabrikator ability to Nina. Nina is shocked that Jesper hid being Grisha, but Jesper deflects and focuses on helping Inej. The crew then questions what triggered the alarm, and Nina explains that guards saw her and fired before she subdued them.

The group confronts Kaz for disappearing during the plan. Kaz admits he searched the fifth-floor cells for Pekka Rollins because he wanted to learn who leaked information to him, but claims he did not find Pekka and says the blood came from a guard. The others are angry, and Kaz admits he made a bad call, though he insists their immediate problem matters more.

Matthias explains that Yellow Protocol likely means the Ice Court believes a prison break is underway, making checkpoints dangerous. Wylan and Jesper argue they should abandon Bo Yul-Bayur and escape while they can, but Nina refuses to leave without the scientist. Looking through the embassy skylight, the crew sees guards creating an additional checkpoint before the glass bridge to the White Island, cutting off an easy path forward.

As the crew debates whether any route remains, Inej notices the West Stave delegations arriving, including the House of the Blue Iris and the tattooed men of the Anvil. Inej proposes that she and Nina can get through the checkpoint by entering with the Menagerie, revealing a risky new plan tied to Inej’s traumatic past.
