Chapter 3: Will And Won’t

Harry dozes by his window at Privet Drive, anxiously awaiting Dumbledore’s promised arrival. At eleven, Dumbledore appears, sweeps into the Dursleys’ sitting room, and effortlessly seizes control of the encounter. Harry notices Dumbledore’s blackened, shriveled hand, but Dumbledore delays explanation.

Dumbledore informs Harry that Sirius’s will leaves Harry all possessions, including number twelve, Grimmauld Place. Because Black family magic might prevent non–pure-blood ownership, Dumbledore tests the bequest by summoning Kreacher. When Harry orders Kreacher to be silent and the elf obeys, ownership is confirmed. Reluctant to keep him yet unwilling to let Bellatrix Lestrange gain access, Harry sends Kreacher to work under supervision in the Hogwarts kitchens.

Dumbledore also confirms Buckbeak passes to Harry, but will remain with Hagrid under the alias Witherwings for safety. With practicalities settled, Harry hastily finishes packing; Dumbledore magics Harry’s trunk and Hedwig’s cage to the Burrow.

Before leaving, Dumbledore confronts the Dursleys about their neglect and explains the protective magic tethering Harry to their home lasts only until he turns seventeen. He asks that Harry return once more before that birthday to renew the protection. The Dursleys, cowed and silent, acquiesce by default.

Dumbledore equips Harry with his Invisibility Cloak and, promising further explanation and a detour on the way to the Burrow, leads him out into the night.
