Chapter 26: The Cave

Harry and Dumbledore Apparate to a desolate sea cliff tied to Tom Riddle’s past. They descend to a fissure, swim through a tunnel, and enter a cave steeped in Voldemort’s magic. Dumbledore identifies a concealed doorway that demands blood; he opens it with his own, revealing a vast underground lake with a green glow at its center.

Testing with a Summoning Charm triggers a violent disturbance in the water, confirming guardians below. Dumbledore locates and raises a hidden, Voldemort-enchanted boat and explains it measures magical presence, allowing Harry to accompany him. Crossing the lake, Harry glimpses corpses—Inferi—beneath the surface, and Dumbledore warns that fire repels them.

On a central island they find a basin of emerald potion shielding the Horcrux. Unable to dispel or remove the potion by magic, Dumbledore concludes it must be drunk. He commands Harry to ensure he keeps drinking despite any effects. Harry obeys, force-feeding goblet after goblet as Dumbledore pleads, convulses, and relives unseen horrors, growing increasingly tormented and weakened.

When the potion ends, Dumbledore collapses and begs for water. Conjured water repeatedly vanishes, forcing Harry to draw lake water, which triggers the Inferi. Swarming undead seize Harry and try to drag him under. Dumbledore revives enough to encircle them with a ring of fire, driving the Inferi back.

Dumbledore retrieves the golden locket from the basin and, still maintaining the flames, leads Harry back to the boat. They recross the lake, return through the blood-locked door using Harry’s cut, and swim out to the cliff tunnel. Exhausted but alive, Dumbledore leans on Harry as they leave, assuring him he is not worried because he is with Harry.
