Summary
Galva, still in the Goltay hospital, discovers a rose and a sonnet from Queen Mireya inviting a clandestine meeting at the Statue of Nerêne on Elephant’s March the evening of her release. Sister Punch confirms Galva is fit to leave, explaining the hospital’s mercenary pragmatism and the urgency of returning warriors to the field.
Before the rendezvous, Galva seeks a bath. In the crowded bathhouse she senses a shift in the army’s mood—soldiers joke, admire the city, and hold death a little farther off. She navigates the jostling rooms, comforts a trembling novice fighter, buys scented oil, and endures intrusive bathers before leaving for the pleasure quarter.
At Nerêne’s statue, Galva confronts a leering man harassing young women. When Galva moves to punish him, he snatches her rose and flees with remarkable agility, drawing her toward the river. There, a covered wherry reveals Mireya within, who invites Galva aboard. Mireya, serene and playful, offers chilled mead conjured with water-magic, and the two share an intimate encounter that is tender, assured, and transformative for Galva.
Afterward, unsteady and newly awakened to her desires, Galva wanders the riverside, reassessing her body, men, and women. A fair-haired courtesan from the Beehive addresses her as “sister” and invites her along; encouraged by Mireya’s promise that all is permitted and nothing expected, Galva agrees to go.
