Chapter 6

Overview

NASA mourns Mark Watney, then discovers via satellite images that he is alive at Ares 3. Venkat, Teddy, and Annie manage the revelation, delaying telling Hermes while going public. Communication proves impossible for now, and a high-risk Ares 4/MDV rescue concept emerges. NASA pledges total focus on his return.

Summary

At Johnson Space Center, Venkat Kapoor returns from Mark Watney’s memorial, arguing with NASA administrator Teddy Sanders for satellite time to assess the Ares 3 site. Teddy resists due to PR risk of showing Watney’s body, but considers Venkat’s pitch for salvaging Ares 3 hardware and potential future funding.

On the overnight shift, SatCon tech Mindy Park receives Ares 3 images, noting the Hab intact, clean solar panels, two deployed rover pop-tents, and no visible body. Cross-checking mission logs, she finds no record of tent deployment and alerts Venkat. Together they identify further evidence: Rover 2 has been moved since last charge, the MDV is dismantled, and the MAV fuel plant removed, making post-evacuation activity unmistakable.

In a tense meeting, Teddy, Venkat, and media chief Annie Montrose conclude Watney is almost certainly alive. They decide not to tell the Hermes crew to avoid distracting them during the return flight. Annie prepares the announcement and, after internal confirmation, publicly reveals Watney’s survival. Teddy flies to inform Watney’s parents, acknowledging that starvation remains a looming threat.

Engineering teams fail to find a way to contact Watney without the destroyed comm dish; all backup links departed with the MAV. Public and institutional support surges; satellites are retasked to increase imaging of Ares 3. NASA vows total commitment to a rescue while fielding relentless media coverage.

Venkat relays JPL’s early rescue concept: strip and refuel the Ares 4 MDV to land at Ares 3, then perform a dangerous lateral hop to Ares 4’s MAV. Teddy rejects it as too risky for now but keeps options open while demanding solutions to keep Watney alive. The chapter closes with Watney’s Sol 61 log, a brief joke, confirming his continued presence.
