2 • THE UNDERWORLD SENDS ME A PRANK CALL
Overview
Percy reaches Camp Half-Blood and finds it outwardly normal but full of hidden tension: a mysterious new sword instructor has arrived, Dionysus is away on war-related business, and Grover’s search for Pan is nearly over unless he can prove his claims within a week. Tyson’s return gives Percy comfort, but reports of war under the sea and Annabeth’s secrecy deepen the sense that multiple crises are converging.
The chapter’s major revelation comes at night, when Percy sees Nico di Angelo alive near the River Styx, guided by a ghost toward resurrecting Bianca through a soul exchange. Because the ghost specifies someone who has cheated death, Percy understands that Nico’s grief and resentment may turn him into a direct threat.
Summary
Percy and Annabeth take a tense taxi ride to Camp Half-Blood after the disaster at Goode High. Annabeth is evasive about her monster-filled spring in San Francisco, her secret visits to camp, Grover’s search for Pan, and Luke’s whereabouts. Percy calls his mother to say he is safe, then worries over Rachel Dare’s phone number and Kelli’s warning that camp will burn.
At Camp Half-Blood, the borders appear intact under Peleus the dragon and the Golden Fleece, but Percy senses unease. Annabeth leaves to find Clarisse, saying they have been working on something, while Percy goes to the sword arena. There he nearly attacks a huge hellhound before meeting Quintus, the new sword instructor, whose pet Mrs O’Leary is harmless but terrifying. Quintus is skilled, mysterious, marked by a strange old brand, and overseeing dangerous crates from the Triple G Ranch for a coming training exercise.
Chiron takes Percy aside and confirms that Kelli did not die but escaped, which makes the empousai threat more serious. Chiron then brings Percy to Grover’s formal hearing before the Council of Cloven Elders. The council refuses to believe Grover heard Pan’s voice and gives Grover only one more week to prove his claim or lose his searcher’s licence. Juniper, Annabeth, and Clarisse support Grover, but Clarisse hints at a dangerous “other option” that Grover may have to consider.
Percy returns to the Poseidon cabin for inspection and finds Tyson, his Cyclops half-brother, has arrived and cleaned the cabin beautifully. Percy and Tyson reconnect, work in the forges with Beckendorf, and discuss tensions under the sea, where ancient sea powers are beginning to make war on Poseidon. Percy also spends time with Annabeth, who remains distracted by Grover’s problem, and later trains with Quintus while Tyson plays with Mrs O’Leary.
At dinner, Percy notices the sealed crack in the dining pavilion floor and tells Tyson the secret of Nico di Angelo: Nico is a son of Hades, blamed Percy for Bianca’s death, and may also be connected to the Great Prophecy if Percy dies before turning sixteen. That night, Percy receives a collect Iris-message through the Poseidon cabin’s fountain. The vision shows Nico at the River Styx, destroying his Mythomagic cards and speaking with a ghostly adviser who urges him toward a soul-for-a-soul exchange to bring Bianca back.
The ghost tells Nico that the exchange must involve someone who has cheated death, framing murder as justice and vengeance. Nico resists but finally asks for the ghost’s plan, and the message cuts off before Percy can hear more. Percy realizes Nico is alive, dangerous, and probably intends to come after Percy as the soul needed to resurrect Bianca.
