Chapter Four
Overview
SecUnit, Ratthi, and Gurathin board the damaged hauler and discover that Lutran was killed aboard it, turning the ship into the confirmed crime scene. Station Security's investigation reveals a disturbing surveillance gap: Lutran entered alone, no one else is recorded entering or leaving, and his body was later removed by delivery cart.
The evidence suggests the killer used sophisticated concealment, possibly an espionage-grade jamming tool, raising the stakes beyond an ordinary murder. Although Special Investigator Aylen suspects SecUnit at first, SecUnit provides an alibi and is unexpectedly ordered by Indah to join Aylen's next lead.
Summary
SecUnit forces open the damaged Corporation Rim hauler while Ratthi argues that Station Security should be called and Gurathin helps block the port camera. SecUnit prevents automatic alerts, sends drones ahead, and has Ratthi and Gurathin stay behind it as they enter the low-end cargo transport.
Inside, the ship is lit and on human life support, but its systems are badly damaged and a maintenance drone is malfunctioning. The bad smell leads them to the crew lounge, where SecUnit finds dried bodily fluids and a blue bag, confirming that someone died there. After SecUnit's drones verify that the transport is now empty, SecUnit tells Ratthi to call Station Security.
Station Security and the Port Authority arrive after SecUnit has gathered scan and visual data. Officer Doran questions how SecUnit knows the ship is clear, and Gurathin defends SecUnit's expertise. Indah then arrives with the investigative team, and Tural confirms that the victim found earlier matches Lutran, barring spoofing.
Indah and Special Investigator Aylen question how SecUnit identified this transport. SecUnit explains that the damaged transport named Lutran as a passenger and that SecUnit had been checking transports one by one. Aylen then directly asks whether SecUnit had anything to do with the killing, prompting SecUnit to give an ill-judged dark joke before Gurathin pushes SecUnit to provide an alibi. SecUnit sends video showing that it was with Dr. Mensah at the council offices when Lutran was killed.
Aylen reveals why SecUnit was under suspicion: transit ring surveillance shows Lutran entering the transport, but no one else ever enters or exits. SecUnit realizes the footage must have been altered or jammed and briefly worries that GrayCris may have sent a construct, though Indah says analysts suspect a jamming device rather than a system hack. Aylen also shows that Lutran's body was likely removed in a delivery cart, and SecUnit concludes the killer probably meant to return later to clean the transport but ran out of time.
Indah decides that Forensics and Medical will hold the scene while Aylen pursues the outsystem ship connected to the transport's next cargo. To SecUnit's surprise, Indah orders Aylen to take SecUnit along, shifting SecUnit from tolerated outsider to reluctant investigative asset.
