Chapter Fifty-Four: Prax
Overview
At a Luna reception, Prax briefly experiences peace with Mei, Holden’s crew, Bobbie, and Avasarala’s circle, while considering the possibility of rebuilding Ganymede. That fragile calm breaks when Fred Johnson destroys Nguyen’s remaining protomolecule hybrids, proving the Belt has become a military power.
The destruction triggers a far greater revelation: Venus responds by launching an enormous protomolecule-built structure into space. The event transforms the crisis from a human political and military struggle into the beginning of an unknown, alien-scale development.
Summary
At a United Nations reception on Luna, Prax sits with Mei among politicians, scientists, Bobbie, and the crew of the Rocinante. Mei remains physically attached to Prax but is drawn to Amos, who treats her messy, childish behavior with easy affection. Prax observes how the room separates into political and scientific circles, while Holden’s crew remains comfortable at the center.
Holden asks Prax about the risks of low-gravity childbearing, and Prax explains that natural pregnancies in low gravity often have serious developmental problems unless they are carefully screened and medically managed. Holden is visibly discouraged, while Naomi quickly dismisses the question as idle conversation, suggesting the issue has personal significance for them.
While Prax searches for tofu for Mei, Avasarala receives news that Fred Johnson has destroyed Nguyen’s remaining protomolecule hybrid soldiers with nuclear missiles after they crossed into the Belt. Prax sees the destruction as good news, but Avasarala recognizes the political danger: Fred has publicly demonstrated that the Belt now possesses serious offensive power.
Prax speaks with Bobbie, who confirms she is returning to Mars for her brother’s wedding. Bobbie asks whether Prax will take Avasarala’s offer to help rebuild Ganymede, and Prax enthusiastically explains that Ganymede still has the resources and scientific foundation to be restored. Prax frames catastrophe as part of a larger cycle of destruction and renewal, though Bobbie hears a painful romanticism in his optimism.
The reception abruptly falls silent when Avasarala reacts to another development and leaves for a meeting room. Prax, Holden’s crew, Bobbie, politicians, and scientists follow her, finally mixing as one anxious group. A live-delayed feed of Venus shows ships near the planet, then reveals massive interference and violent motion around them.
As the feed resolves, Venus responds to the destruction of the hybrid soldiers. A colossal protomolecule structure rises through the planet’s cloud cover, glowing with vast filaments and lightning-like spokes, then launches into space without a visible drive plume. The object scatters ships in its path and accelerates away like a living thing, leaving Prax frozen as Mei asks what it is.
