Chapter 21

Overview

Unnatural rain and cold overtake the Canaan House vision as the Sleeper's threat escalates with the execution-style deaths of Palamedes Sextus and Camilla Hect. Dulcinea Septimus and Protesilaus enter the group dynamic, while Abigail pushes the survivors toward cooperation instead of panic or reckless assault.

Harrowhark discovers a threatening note among Palamedes's effects, but Ortus perceives something entirely different, deepening the instability of the false world. Ortus also reveals his awareness that Harrowhark's parents caused Mortus's death, shifting his relationship with Harrowhark from passive loyalty toward open bitterness.

Summary

In the Canaan House vision, unnatural rain begins early one morning and does not stop. Fog rises from the sea, the cold deepens, and the rain smells of engine lubricant and blood. Teacher anxiously says the weather is impossible for the season, while Harrowhark struggles with the constant dripping because it feeds the false symphony in Harrowhark's head, now accompanied by a thin wail like a newborn.

The residents then find a second round of bodies: Camilla Hect and Palamedes Sextus lie on steel slabs in the mortuary, dressed in Sixth House greys and killed by point-blank gunshots that destroy their faces. Abigail Pent leads the examination, Ortus mourns openly, and Harrowhark remains unnervingly calm. Because the bodies cannot be identified by their faces, Magnus Quinn brings in the Seventh House flesh magician, Dulcinea Septimus.

Dulcinea arrives in a wheeled chair, attended by her huge cavalier Protesilaus, and explains the pulmonary drain keeping her lungs working. She examines the corpses, takes samples, and identifies the bodies as Camilla and Palamedes. Harrowhark argues that the wounds match Judith Deuteros's shooting and that the Sleeper is probably responsible, while Magnus warns that if the Sleeper is not the killer, then there may be a second gun-wielding murderer.

Protesilaus urges an assault on the Sleeper's coffin, but Ortus objects that such an attack would simply get the cavaliers killed. Magnus tries to mediate and suggests gathering the surviving Houses together instead. Abigail begins organizing everyone, asking Dulcinea to find Silas, Magnus to contact Lieutenant Dyas, and Harrowhark to seek the Tridentarius twins, while also trying to move people out of the flooding parts of the facility.

After Camilla's body is moved, Dulcinea mourns Palamedes and Camilla in intimate terms. Abigail studies Palamedes's belongings, and Harrowhark opens a tightly rolled piece of flimsy from Palamedes's effects despite Ortus warning her not to. Harrowhark reads a violent message promising a quick death for one person and fiery destruction for two others, but Ortus says he sees only a calligraphic letter S, revealing a disturbing difference in perception.

As Harrowhark and Ortus leave through the rain-lashed corridor, Ortus challenges Harrowhark's control over his actions and mentions that his father, Mortus, died because Harrowhark's parents commanded it. Harrowhark realizes Ortus has long understood the circumstances of Mortus's death, and Ortus responds with bitter contempt. A gust of rain then blows rusted pipette needles into the corridor, and Ortus quietly asks whether Harrowhark wants to know if Ortus can see them too.
