Chapter 26
Overview
Harrow witnesses Silas Octakiseron push Coronabeth Tridentarius from a rain-swept docking terrace, then leap after Coronabeth when Harrow confronts him. The scene adds another violent fracture to the false Canaan House sequence, leaving both adepts’ fates unclear and deepening the sense that old rivalries, guilt, and unresolved mysteries are collapsing into catastrophe.
Summary
Harrowhark notices rain on the docking terrace and black figures standing at the foggy edge. Keeping bone chips ready in her hands, Harrow goes outside and recognizes Coronabeth Tridentarius, soaked and motionless, with Silas Octakiseron standing behind Coronabeth.
Harrow hears Silas curse Coronabeth’s bloodline, then Silas pushes Coronabeth from the docking bay. Coronabeth falls silently into the fog below, and Silas does not look after her. When Silas turns toward Harrow, Harrow challenges Silas to defend himself, invoking the black vestals’ answer for murder.
Silas responds with contempt for the black vestals and speaks as though Harrow has done something unforgivable. Harrow refuses to engage with Eighth House mysteries and focuses on Silas having pushed a Tridentarius to a likely death. Silas questions whether Coronabeth’s fall means death, then looks out over the fog and sea.
Expecting violence, Harrow scatters bone chips and quickly grows five skeletal constructs from them despite the rain. Harrow orders Silas to raise his hands or force Harrow to strike down an unarmed man. Instead, Silas asks whether this is how events happen, turns away, and leaps off the terrace after Coronabeth before Harrow’s skeletons can stop him.
Harrow reaches the edge, held back by Harrow’s constructs for safety, and looks down into the fog. Harrow sees no clear sign of either Silas or Coronabeth, though Harrow thinks Harrow glimpses a torn shape and a sudden bloodlike rupture in the clouds before it vanishes.
