Chapter 10

Overview

Helena’s imprisonment expands from private confinement to direct observation of New Paladia’s ruling society during Ferron’s solstice party. She sees Ferron’s public power, his ruthless enforcement of regime violence, and the hollow performance of his marriage to Aurelia.

The chapter also gives Helena new access and new mysteries: she learns she can request reading materials, sees propaganda about executions and the repopulation program, and discovers a hidden alchemical room with a cage and massive nine-point array. Ferron’s sudden arrival there turns her investigation into immediate danger.

Summary

Helena sits in her room trying to detect any remaining resonance in her fingers, but the manacle still suppresses her. Her thoughts move through the history, theology, and politics of resonance: old alchemical beliefs about humanity, Paladia’s lumithium mines, the guilds’ control of certification, and the Undying’s use of necrothralls. She studies the manacle and suspects its suppression may come from Eastern alchemy, possibly involving a lumithium alloy or corrosive metal encased in ceramic.

A stranger named Lancaster enters Helena’s room, delighted and intent, but Helena only feels terror and cannot place him. Ferron arrives before Lancaster can touch Helena, coldly removes him, and makes clear Helena is not available to guests. Afterward Helena realizes Spirefell is hosting a solstice eve party, and curiosity overcomes caution; she leaves her room to spy, discovering Aurelia having a secret sexual encounter with another man before Helena retreats to a balcony above the ballroom.

From the balcony, Helena observes New Paladia’s elite: liches, Aspirants, wealthy regime supporters, Stroud, Mandl, Governor Fabian Greenfinch, and other guests. Ferron stands apart while the room orients around him, and Aurelia returns disheveled to pose beside him for the solstice countdown. At midnight Ferron kisses Aurelia for the cameras, but while doing so he locks eyes with Helena, unsettling her.

The celebration turns violent when Durant drags in a chained family accused of hidden connection to the Eternal Flame and proposes killing them as entertainment. Ferron objects to the spectacle, then abruptly snaps the necks of all five captives himself, insisting executions must be clean and lawful under His Eminence’s rules. The party is briefly shocked but soon resumes, while Helena stays until dawn to study New Paladia’s hierarchy and notices that Ferron, as the hidden High Reeve, inspires fear, reverence, and resentment.

On the way back, Helena overhears Aurelia’s father berating Aurelia for failing to conceive a Ferron heir; Aurelia says drugs, perfumes, and alcohol have not worked on Ferron, and he would know if another man fathered her child. Ferron later questions Helena about her spying and Lancaster’s interest, then tells her she may ask the servants for reasonable things. The next day Helena successfully requests books and newspapers, sees propaganda covering Ferron and Aurelia’s public image and the regime’s executions and repopulation program, and endures Ferron reviewing her memories, especially the Lancaster encounter, before he gives her one final white tablet.

Drugged into emotional numbness, Helena explores Spirefell’s east wing and seizes a chance to lock herself inside an unusual room. There she finds boarded windows, the residue of heavy alchemy, a narrow iron cage welded into the floor, and the largest alchemical array she has ever seen, marked by nine inner arrays and concentric circles. As Helena kneels to decipher the array’s resonance flow, Ferron opens the door and appears behind her.
