Chapter 8
Overview
Celaena is pulled away from investigating Archer and forced into guard duty at a royal dinner, where she studies the king’s court and grows uneasy about Roland’s influence over Dorian. Dorian’s jealousy over Celaena and Chaol erupts into a bitter argument when Celaena tries to warn him, deepening the strain between them. The chapter ends with Celaena visiting the imprisoned Kaltain, reopening the unresolved consequences of the duel and Perrington’s possible involvement.
Summary
Celaena plans to follow Archer after their meeting, but Chaol tells her the king has ordered her to assist with guard duty at a state dinner. Because Celaena wants the king and empire to believe she is obedient while she investigates Elena’s warnings, she accepts the assignment rather than risk suspicion.
In the Great Hall, Celaena stands guard near the patio doors while the king, queen, Duke Perrington, Dorian, Roland, councilmen, and nobles dine. Celaena watches the king for clues about his hidden agenda but learns nothing. After the king and Queen Georgina leave, the guests relax, and Celaena notices Roland charming young courtiers beside Dorian. Celaena distrusts Roland’s polished manner and worries that Dorian, who must navigate court politics carefully, may be vulnerable to being used.
The perspective shifts to Dorian, who notices Celaena watching both him and Chaol. Dorian grows jealous and angry when Celaena’s attention lingers on Chaol, reminding Dorian that Celaena ended their romance because his crown denied her the freedom she wanted. Dorian abruptly leaves the Great Hall, trying to focus on his duties and future throne instead of Celaena’s feelings.
Celaena follows Dorian into the hallway and asks what is wrong, but Dorian hides his jealousy behind irritation. Celaena warns him that she does not trust Roland, arguing that Roland’s origins in the small port city of Meah give him much to gain and make him dangerous. Dorian lashes out by comparing Roland’s possible manipulation to Celaena using him to become King’s Champion. Celaena is hurt and furious, accuses Dorian of resenting not getting what he wanted, and leaves after warning he may become someone’s puppet.
Afterward, Celaena visits the dungeon and stands before Kaltain Rompier’s cell. Kaltain, filthy, ill-looking, and still imprisoned after poisoning Celaena during the duel and accusing Duke Perrington of manipulating her, recognizes Celaena and greets her.
