Chapter 23

Overview

Chaol confronts Celaena over her refusal to execute the king’s targets, fearing the king will discover the deception and kill her. Celaena reveals her hope of using information about a Terrasen resistance movement to bargain for freedom, but her plan would take her far from Adarlan.

Chaol chooses Celaena over his unquestioned loyalty to the crown by offering to leave with her, and the two finally admit their feelings through a kiss and a night together. Their relationship becomes intimate and serious, but they agree to keep it hidden because discovery could endanger Chaol and complicate matters with Dorian.

Summary

Chaol reacts with anger and fear after Celaena admits she has been sparing the king’s targets instead of executing them. He warns that the king will kill Celaena if he discovers the deception, and Chaol fears the king might even force Chaol to carry out the punishment because of their friendship.

Celaena defends her choice by insisting the condemned men are not villains but people resisting conquest, sheltering escaped slaves, or believing in a better world. Celaena explains that Archer has given her real information about a Terrasen resistance movement, and she hopes to use that information to bargain for freedom or a shorter contract before the king learns the truth.

When Celaena admits she would leave Adarlan and travel somewhere no one had heard of the empire, Chaol realizes she might vanish from his life forever. Rather than let Celaena go alone, Chaol offers to leave with her, acknowledging that his service as Captain of the Guard may not mean what he once believed. Celaena is moved because Chaol represents the kind of world she still wants to believe can exist.

Chaol finally crosses the emotional boundary he has kept between them and kisses Celaena. Celaena responds with equal intensity, recognizing that their connection has been building for a long time. They return to her rooms together, and after Chaol asks whether Celaena is certain, Celaena tells him she has never been more sure; they spend the night together.

At dawn, Celaena wakes in Chaol’s arms, happy and changed by what happened between them. They discuss the danger of their relationship becoming known, especially because the king might punish Chaol, and they agree to keep it secret. Celaena also insists they should not tell Dorian outright, both to avoid complicating matters and to protect Dorian and Chaol’s relationship.

The morning ends with warmth and teasing as Chaol admits he may have wanted Celaena since the Yulemas ball, or even earlier. Celaena refuses to say when her own feelings began, sensing instead that Chaol has somehow always felt inevitable to her. Their bond is now openly romantic, but it remains surrounded by political danger and secrecy.
