Part II: Night - 2 Shadows

Overview

In a candlelit, powerless house, Inseon and Kyungha encounter the shadow of Ami, Inseon's dead bird, who repeats the word "no"—a habit Inseon developed to retract dangerous wishes. Kyungha traces the shadow over older outlines from a previous visit, sensing she and Inseon share the same buried wish. Inseon reveals her sense of haunting presences began a decade earlier, when she read of remains excavated beneath Jeju Airport's runway, opening the chapter's turn toward historical atrocity.

Summary

Inseon leads Kyungha into the dim house, lighting a candle since the power is out, and asks her not to wake Ama. Kyungha covers the empty birdcage at Inseon's request, while Inseon plays along as though Ama were merely sleeping. Kyungha watches the candle flame and recalls a childhood experiment of running her finger through fire, then briefly tries it again.

A large, vivid bird-shadow appears on the wall, flying between the candle and the wall though no bird is visible. Inseon calmly identifies it as Ami, her dead bird, who sometimes visits for moments and sometimes stays until dawn. Kyungha hears a low voice repeating "No, no" amid sounds like cloth and crumbling soil. Inseon explains she developed a habit of saying "no" aloud to retract words or wishes a spirit shouldn't hear, and Ami learned to mimic the sound.

Kyungha senses Inseon shares the same buried wish she herself battles daily. She borrows a mechanical pencil and traces the bird's shadow on the wall, discovering older outlines from her previous autumn visit—of Ama's head and Inseon's shoulders—overlapping the new one. The pencil lead keeps breaking. The bird's shadow flares as if to fly off, and a faint cheep sounds before fading.

Returning to the table, Kyungha asks where Ama is. Inseon instead speaks of feeling another presence lingering after Ami departs, and reveals this sensation began ten years earlier on a flight back from Manchuria, when she read a newspaper article about human remains being excavated beneath the runway at Jeju Airport. The bird's shadow vanishes; Kyungha braces for Inseon to confront her about Ama's death, but Inseon only quietly examines her own hands.
