Part II: Night - 1 We Do Not Part

Overview

Kyungha wakes from her fever to find Ama impossibly alive, and then encounters Inseon herself in the workshop—uninjured, calm, and seemingly unaware of how she arrived. Over broadleaf bamboo tea they finally name their project "We Do Not Part," debating whether the words mean refusal of farewell or indefinite deferral. The chapter blurs the boundary between living and dead, dream and reality, as Kyungha realizes she and Inseon have not touched, and learns Inseon's other budgie Ami lies buried beneath the same tree.

Summary

Kyungha emerges from feverish nightmares of a dead, scorched landscape and tide-emptied sea. Waking on Inseon's mattress, her fever broken, she finds the room icy and pulls on Inseon's woolen socks and heavy hand-sewn coat. The clock reads four in the afternoon; snow falls in great flakes outside, and the power and water are still off.

Going to fetch a broom, Kyungha hears a chirp and discovers Ama alive on her perch—impossibly, since she had buried the budgie the night before. Disbelieving, she gives the bird water and prepares a plate of millet, cranberries, and walnuts. Ama eats and drinks, and when Kyungha holds her, the bird's weight on her palm feels real. Kyungha eats tofu and walnuts, marveling at a single huge snowflake melting on her hand.

Deciding to light the workshop's wood-burning stove, Kyungha shovels a new path and enters the workshop, where she sees a huddled figure rise: Inseon, her right hand intact and unscathed. Inseon seems unaware of the bloodstains on the floor or how she came to be there, and asks confusedly about the snow and the outage. She lights the stove with old matches and boils water for broadleaf bamboo tea.

Inseon asks the name of their project, and Kyungha answers, "We Do Not Part." They debate its meaning—a refusal of farewell, or a parting deferred indefinitely. Kyungha silently wonders whether Inseon is a spirit visiting her, or whether she herself is the apparition, noting they have not touched once. Inseon reveals that her companion bird Ami died months ago and that Ama refused food for three days afterward. She says she buried Ami beneath the tree in the yard—the same tree under which Kyungha buried Ama, suggesting Kyungha may have disturbed Ami's grave.

Inseon insists she is not alone because she has Ama, and that "we haven't parted ways, not yet." She offers to make bean juk from frozen soaked beans, and the two head back toward the main house through the deepening twilight and falling snow.
