Chapter Fourteen
Overview
Ilya begins therapy with Russian-speaking psychologist Dr. Galina Molchalina, finally voicing lifelong grief over his mother’s death. The session leaves him raw but committed to return. Afterward, Ilya wrestles with whether to tell Shane, then reconnects by sharing old photos and plans a quiet night together, ending the day more hopeful.
Summary
In November, Ilya nervously arrives at Dr. Galina Molchalina’s Ottawa office, choosing her because she speaks Russian and understands his public profile. He admits he might be depressed and, prompted by Galina, opens up about his mother—her hidden struggles, his discovery of her body at twelve, and his father’s denial.
The outpouring leaves Ilya in tears, exhausted yet relieved. Galina avoids early diagnoses, stresses that showing up is progress, and schedules a follow-up. She reframes the process as building a Ferrari, giving Ilya a metaphor for patience he can accept.
After the session, Ilya wanders Ottawa, questioning therapy’s pain but recognizing the value of speaking about his mother. He worries about seeing Shane the next day, deciding not to reveal therapy yet and fearing Shane will sense how raw he feels.
By the canal, Ilya revisits old “selfie” photos from an NHL Awards night with Shane and reflects on his long-hidden longing and an intimate memory from that night. He impulsively texts a photo to Shane, sparking a light exchange about hair, the memory, and plans to watch a documentary together after Shane’s game.
Buoyed by their connection, Ilya feels lighter, sends playful emojis, and heads for home, choosing small comforts—like a stop at the health-food store—while holding to his decision to keep going back to therapy.
