Chapter Twelve

Overview

Seven days after the crisis, the colony situation shifts from survival to aftermath: Barish-Estranza is forced to accept that the colonists control the planet, evacuations begin, and negotiations open paths toward resettlement or research. Holism’s arrival provides backup and infrastructure support, while also creating comic tension with ART. SecUnit, relieved that it can still function, faces unresolved trauma and Three’s uncertain future, then chooses to leave with ART.

Summary

Seven planetary days after the mission, SecUnit is aboard ART while evacuation and negotiations proceed around the lost colony. Holism’s backup ship Sum Total is coordinating shuttles carrying Bellagaia’s faction away from the planet, while the Preservation responder escorts the operation and deters Barish-Estranza from interfering.

With Holism, its crew, and its support ships present as witnesses, Barish-Estranza has been forced to acknowledge Pin-Lee and Karime’s legal documents: under Adamantine’s original charter, the colonists are the sole proprietors of the planet and may stay or leave freely. Barish-Estranza still wants contract labor, but after the task force’s internal collapse, it has little leverage, and the colony factions are preparing to ask the corporation to leave.

The other colonist factions continue negotiating with Mensah, Thiago, and Karime about resettlement in independent colonies beyond the Corporation Rim. Meanwhile, Iris, Kaede, and Martyn negotiate with the separatists, who remain unwilling to rejoin the main colony but agree to explore managing the planet as a research site for alien remnant contamination. Mensah and Pin-Lee will soon arbitrate a meeting between the separatists and University representatives from Holism.

Holism repeatedly contacts SecUnit with infrastructure proposals, irritating ART, which dislikes Holism’s presence and rivalry. The University plans to repair or build missing infrastructure, including communications, satellites, transport links, trade contacts, and removal of contaminated ag-bots. SecUnit redirects Holism’s educational explanations to Three, who is still trying to determine its own interests and may genuinely want to learn.

SecUnit reflects on the near future: Holism’s module is helping repair ART’s wormhole drive, after which ART can leave; Holism will remain to support the planet; Mensah and the Preservation humans will return home; and Amena intends to apply to the University later. SecUnit also thinks about Three’s future and Ratthi and Arada’s proposed trauma recovery work for free SecUnits, recognizing that SecUnit needs recovery too but is not ready to help design it. Ready to leave the planet, SecUnit decides which ship to depart on and asks ART where they are going next.
