Chapter Eight
Overview
SecUnit and the team rapidly create an evidence-backed documentary to counter Barish-Estranza’s propaganda, combining emotional storytelling, archival research, and Tarik’s testimony about corporate violence. When direct access to Trinh fails, SecUnit uploads the video through AdaCol2, and the colonists respond by downloading and watching it in large numbers.
The chapter shifts the conflict from direct confrontation to persuasion, giving SecUnit’s media instincts and the team’s trust in SecUnit a concrete chance to save the colonists. Just as hope appears possible, Supervisor Leonide requests another meeting, leaving Iris and SecUnit to find out whether Barish-Estranza is retreating or changing tactics.
Summary
Back in the team’s rooms, SecUnit starts building a counter-propaganda video to answer Barish-Estranza’s accusations. SecUnit frames the piece around fictionalized versions of the contract workers SecUnit met on the way to Milu, supported by documentary clips, newsfeed material, interviews, and SecUnit’s own memories of corporate abuse. Because the project strains SecUnit’s processing capacity, ART-drone helps explain the plan and organize the shared feed workspace.
Ratthi contributes research on abandoned corporate colonies and offers archived sound clips and transcripts. Ratthi also tells SecUnit that SecUnit is the right person to write the piece because of the letter SecUnit once sent to Dr. Mensah, but SecUnit files that emotional comment away rather than process it. ART-drone suggests treating the project as a persuasive research presentation, while Tarik tests ART-drone’s ability to reproduce human voices and is soon pulled into helping with music and being interviewed about his own corporate death squad past.
Iris receives word from Trinh that the colonists will watch the presentation but still insist the visitors leave by morning, giving the team only five hours. The group works intensely for four hours and twenty-seven minutes: Iris organizes and edits, Ratthi interviews Tarik, ART-drone creates graphics and voice work, and Iris reads narration that ART-drone converts into Dr. Bharadwaj’s voice. The finished piece is too long for a full review, so the team divides it into segments, checks for final corrections, and prepares to deliver it.
When Iris tries to send the presentation, someone else answers Trinh’s comm and says Trinh is unavailable, which alarms Iris because Trinh had distrusted both Iris and Barish-Estranza. Refusing to give up, Iris asks ART-drone how to make the colonists watch it. ART-drone realizes force is unnecessary: SecUnit asks AdaCol2 for upload permission, tags the file as entertainment and educational, and sends the presentation with its supporting data package. AdaCol2 posts it as a new gift from the University of Mihira and New Tideland visitors.
ART-drone blocks the team from obsessively watching the download counter for forty-eight minutes, so the humans watch the completed video while SecUnit distracts itself with Sanctuary Moon. SecUnit reflects anxiously on how hard everyone worked to make the idea succeed, especially Tarik’s painful interview, Ratthi’s support, Iris’s trust, and ART-drone’s technical effort. After the viewing, Iris praises the video, Ratthi says that rejecting it would be rejecting the truth, and ART-drone reports that nearly all of the 421 colonists have downloaded it and many have already finished watching.
A message then arrives from Supervisor Leonide: Barish-Estranza wants another meeting and is apparently leaving. Iris decides she and SecUnit should go hear what Leonide has to say, hoping to learn whether Barish-Estranza is giving up on the colonists or planning something else. Ratthi, Tarik, and ART-drone are assigned to prepare the shuttle, and SecUnit accepts Iris’s plan rather than risk another setup alone.
