28 Trapped

Gareth Bryne rides into Salidar and is met by Warder Nuhel Dromand, who escorts him to an inn serving as the Aes Sedai headquarters. Inside, Bryne spots Serenla (Min), Amaena (Leane), and Mara—revealed as Siuan—standing chastened. He recounts their arson, theft, and assault, insisting on the oath they swore to serve him. The Aes Sedai acknowledge the oath but say they need the women first.

Carlinya then discloses that Mara and Amaena are actually Siuan Sanche and Leane Sharif, both stilled. Recognizing the Tower schism, Bryne deduces they want him to build and command an army against Elaida. He agrees only under firm conditions: sole operational command, deference to his military judgment, and a binding commitment that the Aes Sedai will not abandon the war. After a private consultation, Sheriam and the others accept his terms, and Bryne vows to serve until the White Tower is theirs.

During tense exchanges, Siuan challenges Bryne over his pursuit and past conflicts, including her failed Murandian project. Bryne pointedly assigns her menial duties, which she bristles at, yet the Aes Sedai clearly intend to use her skills while keeping her subordinate. Bryne immediately starts planning reconnaissance and recruitment.

In the common room, Min notes the Aes Sedai are energized by the decision, while Logain stirs from his lethargy but remains aloof. Siuan orders Min to guard Logain from conversation and, seething, collects Bryne’s laundry as part of her new role. Min intercepts Siuan and reveals a Foretelling: if Siuan stays close to Bryne, both live; if they are apart too long, both die.

Accepting the grim necessity, Siuan arranges to lodge near Bryne, resigning herself to the humiliation while recognizing his new command will lead the rebels. Min, resigned as well, begins Bryne’s chores, as the rebel Aes Sedai set about raising an army under Bryne’s negotiated authority.
