Overview
Public confusion ends when the Chief Elder reveals Jonas has been selected, not assigned, as the next Receiver of Memory. She outlines the role’s rarity, painful training, required qualities, and Jonas’s Capacity to See Beyond. Jonas briefly perceives the crowd change and accepts the role as the community chants his name.
Summary
As the Ceremony’s applause falters after Jonas is skipped, the Chief Elder apologizes to the community and to Jonas, then calls him to the stage. Jonas, humiliated and terrified, obeys. She clarifies that Jonas has not been assigned but selected for a special role: Receiver of Memory.
The Chief Elder explains the Receiver’s singular status and rarity, noting a failed selection a decade earlier and the need for unanimous certainty. She indicates the current Receiver—a bearded Elder with pale eyes—who will train Jonas. The Receiver-in-training must be alone and apart, beyond ordinary observation or behavioral correction.
She lists the required qualities: intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom (to be gained through training). She warns that training involves physical pain beyond the community’s experience, underscoring the courage Jonas will need. Jonas feels fear but listens as she introduces a final, ineffable trait: the Capacity to See Beyond.
Pressed by her expectant gaze, Jonas momentarily despairs—then, looking at the crowd, experiences the same mysterious “change” he once saw with the apple. Buoyed by this glimpse, he affirms he sometimes sees something “beyond,” though he cannot explain it.
The Chief Elder concludes by declaring Jonas the next Receiver and thanking him for his childhood. She departs as the community begins chanting his name, signaling acceptance of his new role. Jonas’s pride rises with the chant, yet he remains afraid of the pain, isolation, and uncertainty his selection entails.
