Chapter 33
Overview
Mary heals and rejuvenates by immersing her trapped arm in the awakened plasum, hinting the blobs can both restore and destroy. Jack’s pain vanishes and memories of his Talisman quest resurface. The trio survives a harrowing crossing of Bridge 775, deepening tensions. Camping after, they recommit to dumping the plasums into the Gullet as Jack recalls the Agincourt ballroom.
Summary
Jack and Ry find Mary conscious, pain-free, and rapidly healing as the plasum releases her. Guided by a non-Hestin voice, Mary immersed her arm and emerges rejuvenated, even regrowing hair. She believes the blobs have fully awakened—likely triggered by the tanker explosion—and are on their side if delivered to the Gullet. Jack tests Sorcerer’s plasum; it won’t admit his hand, but it numbs his pain and sparks memories of knights guarding the Talisman.
After rest and food, Mary’s vigor contrasts with Jack and Ry’s exhaustion. She admits the blobs are “sharing breakfast” with her, and suggests they might heal Jack’s finger; he declines. Discussion links the voices to Jack’s past, while Mary asserts the plasums are powerful allies that must reach the Gullet. Jack decides to swap convoy order but keeps Sorcerer due to the plasum’s weight and unease about moving it.
They depart Hold 19 with Ry gloomily taking point. On the Giledee Rode, they pause near ravines and approach rickety Bridge 775. Ry, seemingly courting death, charges across first and makes it. Jack follows through shrieking metal and succeeds. Mary’s truck stalls on the far incline; as the bridge fails, Ry sprints onto it, wrestles into the driver’s seat, restarts, and roars Lazaro to safety as the bridge collapses behind them. Mary, furious at Ry’s crack about “women drivers,” punches him, and the group cools tensions.
At camp, they eat, plan for three to four more days, and recall past horrors and echoes—Morgan Sloat/Orris, Blasted Lands, and Mid-World’s tech-as-magic strangeness. Ry notes Mary’s profound change; Jack withholds some resurfacing memories. Mary admits she searched for and found something that morning but won’t say what. She defines success as getting the plasums into the Gullet, leaving the closing of it to fate.
As night deepens, Jack watches Old Mother, ponders the Shadow Queen/Sophie and Judy Marshall’s America-side life, and finally remembers the Agincourt in Point Venuti and its ballroom—key to his Talisman past. He sleeps with renewed, if uneasy, purpose as they press on toward the Gullet.
