Chapter 62
Overview
Selwyn Kane does not die after touching Arawn’s crown; the crown transforms him, revealing that he is the rightful heir it recognizes. The discovery that Sel is the Shadow King’s son radically changes the stakes, turning Sel from a fallen ally into a newly crowned, dangerous power.
Bree and Nick are left stunned as Sel claims the crown and redefines their positions as king, knight, and prince. The chapter pivots the story from survival after Erebus to a new crisis centered on Sel’s lineage and transformation.
Summary
Bree and Nick react in horror as Selwyn Kane’s body begins to fall after touching Arawn’s crown. Before their shock can settle, a gurgling sound rises from Sel’s chest and his body violently reanimates.
Sel’s spine straightens, his head snaps forward, and his eyes open red and inhuman. His fangs lengthen, his breathing turns into a sinister chuckle, and Bree realizes the crown has not killed Sel as it was supposed to kill false bearers; instead, it has transformed him.
The revelation follows immediately: like Excalibur, the crown recognizes its rightful heir, meaning Sel is the Shadow King’s son. Sel places the crown on his head, calls it something his father dropped, and frames the three of them as a king, a knight, and a prince.
Nick asks how this is possible, but Sel has no answer. Sel’s new ravenous demeanor leaves Bree and Nick facing a changed Sel, now tied by blood and power to the Shadow King and poised to decide what comes next.
