Chapter 26: The Cave

Dumbledore brings Harry to a bleak seaside cliff where Tom Riddle once terrorized orphans. After a treacherous swim through a fissure, they enter an antechamber that “has known magic.” Dumbledore identifies a concealed doorway requiring blood as payment and opens it with his own, revealing a vast subterranean lake with a distant green glow.

Testing the defenses, Harry’s Summoning Charm provokes a pale creature in the water. Dumbledore deduces multiple guardians and locates an invisible chain that raises a small enchanted boat. They cross the lake above drifting corpses—Inferi—toward a central island holding a basin of glowing emerald potion that cannot be touched or removed by magic.

Concluding the Horcrux lies beneath, Dumbledore determines the potion must be drunk and orders Harry to make him continue, whatever the effects. As Dumbledore drinks, he weakens and relives torment, begging for release; Harry, horrified, forces each goblet down until the basin is emptied and Dumbledore collapses, pleading for death.

When Dumbledore asks for water, conjured water repeatedly vanishes. Harry realizes Voldemort’s trap and fills the goblet from the lake, triggering an Inferi attack. Harry’s spells fail to stop the advancing dead as they seize him and drag him toward the water—until Dumbledore rises, conjuring a ring of fire that drives the Inferi back.

Dumbledore retrieves the locket from the basin, and, encircled by protective flames, leads Harry back to the boat and shore. Exhausted and pale, Dumbledore lets the fire vanish and leans on Harry. They reopen the blood door with Harry’s cut and swim out. Though gravely weakened, Dumbledore reassures Harry: “I am with you.”
