CHAPTER 20

Overview

Vin remains caught between her skaa instincts and her increasingly convincing noble persona, while the suffering of skaa workers keeps the rebellion’s moral purpose in view. Kelsier’s supply operation reveals that the hidden army is now being actively stocked, but Vin notices that the skaa are beginning to worship Kelsier as much as follow the cause.

Marsh trains Vin in bronze and reveals that her Allomantic instincts are unusually strong, deepening the sense that Vin is exceptional even among Mistborn. Their guarded conversation exposes painful family histories on both sides and complicates Vin’s understanding of Kelsier, loyalty, and sibling love.

Summary

Vin spends her days traveling between Luthadel and Fellise for noble social events, growing frustrated by carriage rides, slow recovery from her Inquisitor wound, and her limited Allomantic practice. She enjoys parts of noble life but worries that Valette is becoming too natural to her, especially as Elend remains distant and Shan Elariel continues to demean her.

On the road and in Fellise, Vin notices skaa workers and children laboring under harsh conditions while nobles pass without concern. The sight sharpens Vin’s uncertainty about the nobility: Vin can see charm and kindness among them, but the oppression of the skaa makes it impossible to ignore the cruelty built into their world.

At Mansion Renoux, Vin finds skaa workers loading supplies and weapons onto carts. Kelsier and Lord Renoux explain that the goods are being sent by canal toward Renoux’s supposed western plantation, but will secretly be dropped at the rebellion caverns. Kelsier plans to travel with Yeden and Marsh to inspect the army and help Marsh join the Ministry acolytes, while Vin will remain behind to preserve Valette’s social position.

While waiting for Marsh, Vin observes the workers whispering reverently about Kelsier, the Survivor of Hathsin, and the Eleventh Metal. Their awe makes Vin uneasy, because Kelsier’s personal legend seems to be growing alongside the rebellion, raising questions about whether he will be willing to surrender power later.

Marsh arrives and trains Vin in bronze, explaining how careful listening to Allomantic pulses can reveal whether someone is burning a Pushing or Pulling metal, an internal or external metal, and eventually which metal is being used. Vin shows unusual talent by identifying pulse origins and Push-Pull differences quickly, surprising Marsh.

Vin secretly uses emotional Allomancy on Marsh to make him speak more freely, and Marsh catches her. Their conversation turns personal: Marsh reveals his hatred of obligators, his long dedication to understanding Allomancy, and his role in identifying Vin as Mistborn months earlier because she instinctively burned metals. Vin shares painful memories of Reen, her mad mother, and the baby sister her mother killed. Marsh and Vin also discuss Kelsier, Mare, Marsh’s unresolved hurt, and Kelsier’s growing reputation, ending with Vin still struggling to understand the idea of loving siblings.
