CHAPTER 5

Overview

Clubs decides to join Kelsier’s crew as a Smoker, giving the plan a secure Allomantic base despite his certainty that the rebellion will fail. Kelsier then raids House Venture for atium, proving both the reach of his Mistborn powers and his willingness to kill noble-aligned defenders to advance the job.

The chapter shifts the plan from talk to action: Kelsier gains needed atium, exposes the danger of hazekillers and noble Allomancers, and deliberately creates a violent disturbance that may help destabilize the Great Houses.

Summary

After the planning meeting ends, Kelsier searches Camon’s former lair and finds a hidden bottle of wine. Dockson and Kelsier discuss the crew’s needs, especially finding another Smoker and obtaining more atium, while Vin remains wary of their friendliness and refuses to drink anything she did not prepare herself.

Clubs returns with his young assistant after making sure Breeze, a Soother, has left. Though Clubs expects Kelsier’s plan to fail, he agrees to join as the crew’s Smoker because he wants a chance to defy the Lord Ruler before being caught. Kelsier then sends Camon’s crew back to their lair and announces that he, Dockson, and Vin are going to the roof so Kelsier can get more atium.

On the rooftop in the mists, Kelsier reflects on old habits, Mare’s absence, and how his Allomantic powers have changed him since the Pits of Hathsin. Dockson identifies House Venture as the strongest and least likely target, making it the ideal place for Kelsier to raid. Kelsier dresses in a Mistborn cloak, removes metal from his body, arms himself with glass daggers, drinks metals, and leaves Vin behind while he leaps into the night.

Kelsier uses steel and iron to travel through the mists toward Keep Venture, demonstrating the freedom and danger of Mistborn movement. He reaches the keep, kills guards, enters through a balcony, and finds Lord Venture’s study. Rather than taking the obvious safe, Kelsier detects a hidden wall safe, rips it free with Allomancy and pewter-enhanced strength, and kills more guards who burst in.

As Kelsier carries the safe out, eight hazekillers attack with wooden shields and canes designed to counter Allomancers. Kelsier cannot simply Push or Pull on them, so he fights through pain, uses coins, a heavy ingot, pewter, steel, and iron in quick combinations, and kills or disables most of them. When House Venture Allomancers arrive and begin attacking with coins and pewterarms, Kelsier chooses escape over a prolonged fight.

Kelsier leaps from a shattered window, Pulls the safe out after him, uses it to control his fall, and lands in the mists below. The safe breaks open, and Kelsier pockets gemstones, letters of credit, and, most importantly, a pouch of atium. Wounded but satisfied, Kelsier retrieves his coin pouch from a dead hazekiller and runs toward Clubs’s shop.
