Chapter V
Overview
Gatsby nervously orchestrates a tea at Nick’s house to reunite with Daisy. After a painfully awkward start, their old feelings resurface, leading to a luminous tour of Gatsby’s mansion and Daisy’s emotional reaction. Gatsby’s dream briefly wavers—symbolized by the diminished meaning of the green light—yet the romance rekindles by chapter’s end.
Summary
Late at night, Gatsby’s house blazes with light as Jay Gatsby anxiously awaits news of Daisy’s invitation. Gatsby awkwardly offers Nick a vague business opportunity, which Nick declines. The next rainy afternoon, Gatsby has Nick’s grass cut and floods the cottage with flowers before arriving, sleepless and tense.
Daisy arrives alone; Gatsby, paralyzed by nerves, meets her in an excruciatingly stiff scene until tea and small talk ease the strain. Nick briefly withdraws so they can speak privately. When he returns, Daisy is tearful, Gatsby is radiant, and their embarrassment has vanished.
Gatsby invites Daisy and Nick to tour his mansion. Gatsby flaunts his rooms, clothes, and trophies, gauging everything by Daisy’s reaction; Daisy bursts into tears over the “beautiful shirts.” A phone call hints at Gatsby’s shadowy business. Gatsby points out the green light across the bay, realizing its symbolic power has faded now that Daisy is present.
Nick notices photos of Dan Cody and clippings about Daisy, underscoring Gatsby’s long fixation. Rain resumes; to prolong the reunion, Gatsby has Klipspringer play piano as Gatsby and Daisy sit together in the dim music-room. Nick senses Gatsby’s fleeting doubt—Daisy cannot fully match his vast dream—yet the two slip into intimate closeness as Nick quietly leaves them together.
