Chapter VI
Overview
Nick reveals Gatsby’s true origins as James Gatz, who remade himself after meeting millionaire Dan Cody but lost a promised inheritance to Ella Kaye. Soon, Tom visits Gatsby, then brings Daisy to a party that repels her and alarms Tom. Gatsby, undeterred, insists Daisy deny ever loving Tom and believes he can re-create their past.
Summary
A reporter arrives, chasing rumors about Gatsby. Nick interrupts to disclose Gatsby’s real past: born James Gatz in North Dakota, he reinvented himself at seventeen upon warning millionaire yachtsman Dan Cody, who took him aboard and mentored him. Gatsby learned restraint from Cody’s excesses but lost a $25,000 legacy to Ella Kaye, keeping only an education in worldly splendor and self-invention.
Weeks later, Nick visits Gatsby and unexpectedly encounters Tom Buchanan, with Mr. Sloane and a woman in a brown riding-habit. The woman impulsively invites Gatsby to supper, but Sloane and Tom contrive to leave without him, slighting Gatsby as he prepares to follow by car.
Soon after, Tom arrives with Daisy at one of Gatsby’s parties. Amid celebrities and clamor, Gatsby proudly parades them, pointedly calling Tom “the polo player.” Daisy and Gatsby share moments together, but the evening sours. Drunken antics and coarse guests repel Daisy, who feels appalled by West Egg’s raw vigor.
Outside, Tom insinuates Gatsby is a bootlegger and mocks the “menagerie.” Daisy wavers, charmed by romantic possibility yet alienated by the crowd. After they depart, Gatsby tells Nick Daisy “didn’t have a good time” and confesses his goal: Daisy must tell Tom she never loved him; then Gatsby and Daisy will return to Louisville as if the last five years never passed.
Nick warns that the past cannot be repeated, but Gatsby insists it can. He recalls the night five years earlier when his first kiss with Daisy fused his vast ambitions to her, completing the persona he had created. Gatsby’s longing to recover that original self and moment now drives his determination to “fix everything.”
