Overview
An unusual cold snap brings snow to Maycomb, leading Jem and Scout to build a snowman that resembles Mr. Avery until Atticus urges them to disguise it. That night, Miss Maudie’s house burns.
During the fire, Boo Radley quietly drapes a blanket over Scout, prompting Jem to reveal their Radley secrets. Miss Maudie remains optimistic despite her loss.
Summary
An unexpected winter hits Maycomb. Mrs. Radley dies of natural causes, disappointing Jem and Scout’s morbid curiosity about Boo. When it snows, school is canceled, and Jem and Scout gather snow from Miss Maudie’s yard to build a snowman with a mud core, shaping it to resemble Mr. Avery.
Atticus praises Jem’s ingenuity but warns against caricaturing neighbors. At his suggestion, Jem disguises the figure with Miss Maudie’s sunhat and hedge clippers, turning it into their “Absolute Morphodite.” As temperatures plummet, the town braces for the cold night.
After midnight, Atticus wakes the children: Miss Maudie’s house is on fire. He stations Jem and Scout by the Radley gate while neighbors battle the blaze and salvage furniture. Mr. Avery barely escapes. The fire threatens adjacent houses until additional trucks arrive and Miss Maudie’s tin roof finally collapses, quelling the flames at dawn.
Back home, Atticus notices a blanket around Scout that isn’t theirs. Realizing Boo Radley must have placed it on her during the fire, Jem impulsively confesses their secret history with the Radleys—the knothole gifts, his mended pants, and Nathan Radley cementing the tree. Atticus advises keeping the blanket incident quiet and suggests Scout thank Boo someday.
The next day, Jem and Scout return Miss Maudie’s hat and clippers. To their surprise, Miss Maudie is upbeat, eager to rebuild a smaller house with more yard for azaleas, and unfazed by staying with Miss Stephanie. She jokes about her Lane cake recipe and downplays her losses.
