Chapter 1

Scout frames the story by recalling Jem’s childhood arm break and their debates on what events led to it. She sketches the Finch lineage from Simon Finch to Atticus’s law practice in Maycomb, establishing the town’s Depression-era lethargy and the family household with Calpurnia, along with Jem’s lingering memories of their deceased mother.

That summer, Charles Baker "Dill" Harris arrives to stay with his aunt, Miss Rachel. Dill quickly bonds with Scout and Jem, entertaining them and revealing gaps in his own family story. As their games grow stale, Dill becomes fixated on the eerie Radley Place and its reclusive inhabitant, Boo Radley.

Scout recounts neighborhood lore: Boo’s teenage mischief with local boys, Mr. Radley’s stern control, an incident involving scissors, and Boo’s long seclusion first under his father, then under his brother Nathan after Mr. Radley’s death. The Radley house’s closed doors and fearful rumors shape children’s routes, stories, and dares.

Spurred by Dill’s taunts and a wager, Jem debates how to provoke Boo without real danger. Finally, to prove his courage, Jem dashes onto the Radley property, slaps the house, and sprints back to safety with Scout and Dill.

From their porch, the children stare back at the dark, decaying house. They think they see an inside shutter flick slightly before going still, a tiny sign that someone—perhaps Boo—noticed them, deepening their fascination and fear.
