Part Six

After the Sun’s “special nourishment,” Josie fully recovers and matures. Seasons pass; Mr McBain’s fields are cut, and college plans spur arguments between Josie, the Mother, and the Father. Josie often travels to retreats and visits, and Rick gradually visits less, absorbed by new projects and friends and his car, the Wreck.

One overcast morning, Klara and Rick speak by the Wreck. Rick recalls the dark-sky day when sunlight flooded Josie’s room and wonders if Klara’s secret plea played a role. Klara refuses to detail it, fearing to endanger Josie’s health. Rick admits his and Josie’s love was genuine then but that their lives must now diverge; he insists the love endures at a deeper level even if they separate.

As Josie hosts peers before college, Klara discovers the Utility Room and Josie builds her a small perch to view the fields. The Mother grows distant, but when Mr Capaldi visits, he asks to “open” AF black boxes to counter public fear by reverse-engineering minds. The Mother intercedes, insisting Klara deserves a respectful “slow fade,” and rebuffs him.

On the eve of departure, Josie confides her fear but vows not to let it rule her, teasing secret personal targets. Rick does not come to see her off. Josie embraces Klara, thanks her, and leaves with the Mother for college, acknowledging Klara may be gone by Christmas.

Later, Klara, now seated in a salvage yard under a wide sky, experiences overlapping memories but can still order them. She observes the yard’s quiet order and refuses relocation. Manager, the former store manager, finds her; they reminisce. Klara explains she could have “continued” Josie but now believes what was special existed in the hearts of those who loved Josie, not inside Josie alone, so a copy would have failed. Manager affirms her service and departs, and Klara remains content with her memories and the Sun’s kindness.
