Part Three

After the tense Morgan’s Falls trip, Josie’s manner remains cold and the Mother grows distant. Days later, Josie’s health collapses. Dr Ryan visits often; Josie mostly sleeps. Melania Housekeeper allows Klara outside alone for the first time. Klara wonders why the Sun hasn’t given Josie special help and considers how to draw his attention.

As Josie slowly regains strength, Rick’s brief bedroom visits begin. They reminisce, then inventively revive a childhood “bubble game”: Josie sketches oversized-headed figures while Rick fills thought bubbles. The game first delights, then turns uneasy as Rick hesitates over darker drawings and Josie reacts unpredictably. Tension peaks when Josie needles Rick about his mother and “society,” Atlas Brookings, and their vague future plan; Rick angrily writes a caustic bubble implying Josie’s illness stems from her mother’s “Courage,” and leaves. Josie grows lethargic and refuses Klara’s offer to replace Rick in the game.

Hoping to mend things, Josie crafts a careful drawing for Rick. Klara delivers it across the fields to Rick’s shabby home, meeting Miss Helen. Rick appreciates the picture but complains of Josie’s jabs and his mother’s portrayal. Miss Helen shares hopes for Rick to try for Atlas Brookings, hints at a “secret weapon,” and asks Klara to press Josie to keep urging him. She recounts seeing the Mother dragging a girl who looked like deceased Sal through the grass. Rick remains skeptical but offers to help Klara reach Mr McBain’s barn when she hints at an urgent plan for Josie.

That evening, Klara attempts the barn alone, falters in the treacherous grass, and Rick rescues her, then carries her piggyback to the clearing. Inside the sunlit barn, Klara silently pleads with the Sun: if she can find and destroy the Pollution-making Cootings Machine, will he grant special help to heal Josie? The light turns gentle; Klara senses acceptance and leaves resolved.

Rick waits in the field; Klara urges him to pursue Atlas Brookings. The next day Rick visits; he and Josie reconcile warmly. Soon after, the Mother schedules an overnight city trip for another portrait sitting with Mr Capaldi and invites Klara; Rick and Miss Helen will ride along. Melania privately warns Klara that Mr Capaldi is dangerous and begs her to watch Josie closely. One night, Josie wakes sobbing and begs for her mother; the Mother comforts her tenderly while Klara reflects on their bond and Josie’s fear of death.
