Chapter Twenty-Three
Overview
Alaric and Talasyn successfully hold the amplified eclipse shield around Iantas for a full hour, proving the plan against the Voidfell may work but revealing a dangerous cost: the magic physically harms them and may permanently deepen their bond. Alaric privately commits to ending Kesath’s wars if the world survives, while Talasyn, still caught between Sardovian duty and her husband, makes a decisive choice to save him.
Summary
Four days after Urduja returns to Iantas, Alaric and Talasyn prepare for the final shield-amplifier demonstration before Alaric must sail back to Kesath and before the Moonless Dark. With no more eclipses available for testing, Ishan Vaikar and the Ahimsan Enchanters set up the modified metalglass jars on the shore while Urduja, Elagbi, and other spectators watch from the castle steps.
When the eclipse begins, Alaric and Talasyn raise a vast sphere of merged Lightweave and Shadowgate around Iantas. Warships surrounding the island fire void magic at the barrier, and the shield successfully absorbs the attacks. As Alaric watches the magic hold, he thinks about Talasyn’s old accusation that any better world he builds will be built on blood, and he resolves that if they survive the Moonless Dark, Kesath will end its wars after dealing with the Sardovian rebels.
After about forty minutes, Talasyn’s endurance begins to fail, and the strain turns dangerous. The amplified eclipse magic redirects inward, burning and freezing Talasyn’s body; the same effect spreads to Alaric as their joined magic damages their hands. Alaric silently asks whether to stop, but Talasyn refuses because they need to know whether the shield can truly last an hour. Alaric steadies her with breathing techniques, and together they endure until the full hour passes and the bombardment stops.
Once the Enchanters dismantle the configuration, the shield collapses, and Alaric and Talasyn stagger into each other’s arms while the watching crowd celebrates. Talasyn’s fingertips return from blue to normal, though blisters remain briefly on her palm. Later, during dinner with Urduja, Elagbi, Ishan, and Alaric, Ishan explains that the amplifiers may have altered Alaric and Talasyn’s aethermancy on a molecular level, deepening the magical connection that lets their powers merge; the effect might fade like poison or become permanent.
Ishan also warns that Aktamasok’s crater is smaller than Iantas, but stopping the Void Sever will require far more magic, so their only real preparation is more practice. Elagbi argues that the method is too risky and urges another plan, but Talasyn insists this is the best option and points to her healing hand as proof that she and Alaric can survive the strain. Privately, however, Talasyn fears working without Alaric after his departure and remains torn between her duty to Urduja’s war plans and her feelings for him.
When an attendant offers Alaric wine, Alaric refuses and asks for water after glancing at Talasyn, showing he has taken her concerns about drinking seriously. The gesture crystallizes Talasyn’s decision: despite the risk that Alaric may hate her or that her own people may condemn her, she resolves to save him.
