Chapter Twenty
Overview
Talasyn and Alaric take shelter from the monsoon in the damaged airship, where their kiss becomes a full surrender to the attraction they have been resisting. Their intimacy is charged with guilt, trust, and old conflict, but both choose to continue and become more emotionally exposed.
The chapter marks a major shift in their relationship: Alaric privately resolves to stop fighting his feelings for Talasyn, even if that loyalty conflicts with the identities and causes that shaped him. Talasyn also recognizes the moment as unforgettable, though her vulnerability and divided allegiances remain unresolved.
Summary
After Alaric admits his desire and kisses Talasyn on the storm-lashed beach, the rain intensifies and forces them to run for shelter beneath the damaged airship. Instead of ending the moment, the shelter gives them privacy, and their teasing, anger, and attraction turn into mutual physical intimacy.
As Alaric and Talasyn continue, Talasyn is aware that giving in to him may deepen her conflict with Sardovia, Nenavar, and everything Alaric represents. Desire overcomes caution, however, and Alaric responds to her reactions with increasing care, especially when he accidentally hurts her and immediately checks whether she wants to stop.
Talasyn and Alaric choose to keep going, both inexperienced in different ways and both vulnerable beneath their banter. Their usual combative dynamic remains present, but it shifts into trust: Talasyn allows Alaric closer, and Alaric restrains himself until she gives clear consent for him to move.
During the storm, they finally surrender to the passion and emotional connection that have been building between them. Alaric realizes that being with Talasyn feels real and right, and he decides he is done fighting what he feels, even if it makes him a monster or a traitor.
Afterward, Alaric kisses Talasyn gently while the storm continues around them. Talasyn, overwhelmed and tearful, hides her emotion against him and fixes the moment in her memory as something that belongs only to the two of them and the monsoon.
