Chapter Twenty-Six
Overview
Alaric returns to a nearly emptied Nenavar on the final day before the sevenfold eclipse, carrying the weight of evacuation failures and the fear that the shield may fail. His reunion with Talasyn is unexpectedly tender and absurd, showing how much trust and attachment have grown between them despite their secrets and political loyalties.
Iantas’s remaining household and Elagbi choose to stay with Talasyn, turning the day into a defiant farewell feast before possible annihilation. The chapter closes by contrasting Elagbi’s unconditional devotion with Gaheris’s conditional command, as Alaric is told to save the world but return with Talasyn or not at all.
Summary
Alaric returns to the Nenavar Dominion after a month away and finds most of the land emptied by evacuation. As the last ships carry Nenavarene refugees toward uncertain safety, Alaric dwells on the possibility that he and Talasyn will be the first to die if their eclipse shield fails at Voidfell that night. His mood is already strained by failed logistics, political conflict, and the impossibility of saving everyone.
During the month in Kesath, Alaric has preserved the rescued sariman, privately naming it Guava, and has exchanged formal, argumentative letters with Talasyn. At Iantas, Jie greets him and explains that Talasyn urged the household to leave, but many servants, villagers, and Prince Elagbi stayed with her. Alaric insists on being taken to Talasyn rather than to his chambers.
Alaric finds Talasyn in the kitchens, covered in pink cake batter after an attempted salamander-currant dessert explodes. The absurd reunion softens Alaric’s anxiety, and Talasyn realizes how much trust has grown between them, since she no longer fears his approach while temporarily blinded. Later, the two spar on the beach, testing their readiness while acknowledging Alaric’s fatigue, Sevraim’s evacuation, and the dangerous uncertainty of Alaric’s own officers.
Prince Elagbi interrupts with lunch, and Talasyn scolds her father again for refusing to evacuate. The remaining people of Iantas hold a feast despite the danger, greeting Alaric with more respect than he expects. Alaric awkwardly joins the Nenavarene meal, and the gathering offers a fragile calm before the possible end of the world.
As evening approaches, Talasyn asks Elagbi one last time why he stayed. Elagbi tells her he trusts her and would rather face death than leave his daughter alone at the end, leaving Talasyn overwhelmed by his love. Later, as dusk deepens, Talasyn asks Alaric to make a quick stop before the eclipse, and he agrees to visit Eskaya before they go to the Void Sever.
While preparing for the night’s battle, Alaric is summoned into the In-Between by Gaheris. Gaheris says the Kesathese fleet has sailed as far north as possible and gives Alaric a stark farewell that briefly feels like affection. Alaric promises not to fail Kesath, but Gaheris ends by ordering him to bring Talasyn back to Kesath after the crisis—or not return at all.
