Chapter 19
Overview
Chaol’s capture by Aedion and the Terrasen rebels becomes a dangerous exchange of secrets rather than an execution. Aedion reveals that he has never been controlled by the king’s ring and has secretly remained loyal to Terrasen, while Chaol reveals the greatest secret he knows: Celaena is Aelin and she is alive.
The revelation transforms Aedion’s role from apparent traitor to hidden protector and gives Chaol leverage with the rebels. By ending with Chaol proposing a bargain, the chapter shifts the Rifthold plot toward a possible alliance built on mutual risk, magic, and Aelin’s return.
Summary
Chaol allows Aedion’s sentries to capture him after following Aedion to a rebel hideout. In an old hay-smelling room, Chaol faces Aedion, the scarred young rebel Ren, and Ren’s grandfather Murtagh. Chaol warns that Aedion is dangerous because of the king’s ring, but Aedion reveals that he never accepted the real ring: he sensed something wrong, threw it into the sea, and has worn a replica ever since.
Chaol realizes that Aedion is not enslaved to the king and has been deceiving Adarlan for years. Aedion also realizes that Chaol knows too much, including the significance of the rings, and threatens to torture and kill him unless Chaol explains what is happening inside the glass castle. To survive and to protect Dorian by gaining rebel knowledge about magic, Chaol takes a dangerous gamble and reveals that Aelin is alive.
The perspective shifts to Aedion, who reflects on the many false names he has endured, especially being called Adarlan’s Whore. Aedion has secretly minimized bloodshed in Terrasen, staged battles with the Bane, and preserved his loyalty to his lost queen. He won back the Sword of Orynth from the King of Adarlan as a symbolic act, though he has always considered it Aelin’s by right and carries guilt for failing to save her family.
On an empty dock in the slums, Aedion privately hears Chaol’s account of Celaena Sardothien: her training under Arobynn, her fall into Endovier, her rise as the King’s Champion, and her true identity as Aelin. Ren has beaten Chaol to test his resolve, but Chaol will speak only to Aedion. Aedion is shaken by the news, furious at the risk Chaol took in revealing it, and overwhelmed by the possibility that the cousin and queen he mourned is alive.
Chaol explains why he trusted Aedion: Aedion lacks the darkness Chaol associates with the ring-controlled men, has suspiciously avoided his own parties, and has delayed the arrival of the Bane. Aedion asks whether Dorian knows and learns that Dorian does not know Celaena’s identity or Fae heritage. When Aedion asks why Chaol followed the rebels, Chaol says he seeks valuable information, and after Aedion asks about the rings, Chaol refuses to simply answer and instead proposes a bargain.
