Chapter 11

Overview

Celaena begins her punishment in Mistward’s kitchen, where she adopts the name Elentiya and finds temporary relief in anonymity, work, warmth, and food. Through Emrys and Luca, she learns that Mistward shelters demi-Fae who are largely excluded from Doranelle unless Maeve deems their gifts valuable.

The chapter deepens Celaena’s isolation and trauma while expanding the rules of Wendlyn’s Fae society and magic. Rowan’s reputation as an ancient, ruthless servant of Maeve raises the stakes for Celaena’s training, even as she remains determined to endure it for Nehemia’s sake and to oppose the king.

Summary

Celaena wakes before dawn in her freezing room at Mistward, sore from the previous night and still injured. Rowan has left a healing salve from Maeve, water, soap, and clean clothes. As Celaena washes and dresses, the sight of Chaol’s amethyst ring draws her into grief and anger: Chaol’s choices, Nehemia’s death, and Celaena’s own emotional exhaustion all weigh on her before she forces herself to go downstairs.

Rowan brings Celaena to the warm kitchen and presents her as the new scullery maid for the morning. Because Celaena wants her identity concealed, Rowan silently lets her choose a name, and Celaena calls herself Elentiya, the name Nehemia gave her. Celaena meets Emrys, the elderly cook, and Luca, a cheerful young kitchen worker; both are demi-Fae. Emrys notices Celaena’s scars, accent, and injuries, but Celaena only says that Adarlan will do that to a person and asks for work.

During the chaotic breakfast preparations, Celaena chops vegetables, washes pans, and enjoys being treated as nobody rather than feared or watched. After the rush, Luca urges her to eat, and Celaena devours Emrys’s food because she needs strength for Rowan’s coming magic training. Emrys’s kindness and Luca’s ease unsettle Celaena, making her compare their uncorrupted lives to her own violence, guilt, and failures.

As Emrys and Luca talk with Celaena, she learns more about Mistward and Doranelle. Many demi-Fae live at Mistward or similar outposts because they are not accepted by humans and are not considered worthy of Doranelle unless they have useful gifts. Emrys spent years training for Doranelle before choosing a home at Mistward with his mate, Malakai. Luca explains that gifted demi-Fae are often taken by Maeve, while ordinary ones remain behind.

Celaena asks about magic and Rowan, trying to understand what awaits her. Luca says most local magic is minor elemental ability, though rarer powers like fire, shifting, or raw magic are more prized. Emrys says Rowan is ancient, one of Maeve’s elite warriors and spies, and Luca calls him a brutal killer whose tattoo is rumored to list his victims. Celaena insists she can handle Rowan, but as she turns to the dishes, she sinks back into the realization that she can no longer remember what it feels like to be free.
