Chapter 24
Overview
Chaol secretly brings Aedion into Elena’s tomb and reveals the truth about Aelin, the Eye of Elena, and the king’s Wyrd-based power, but Dorian overhears everything. Dorian feels betrayed by Chaol and Celaena’s secrecy, rejects involvement in their plans, and struggles to contain his dangerous ice magic. Aedion then meets Ren and Murtaugh, withholds Aelin’s location, and begins the difficult work of rebuilding a Terrasen court for her return.
Summary
Chaol returns to the castle after bargaining with Aedion and the rebels, hiding his injuries behind a lie about a street fight. The bargain is information for information: Chaol will share what he knows about Aelin, the king’s black rings, and the king’s power, while Aedion’s side will share what they know that might help Dorian and the rebellion.
Late at night, Chaol and Aedion enter Celaena’s old rooms and descend into Elena and Gavin’s tomb to avoid spies. Chaol shows Aedion the Eye of Elena and explains that Celaena gave it to him before leaving for Wendlyn. Chaol prepares to reveal that Celaena is Aelin Galathynius and that she uncovered the king’s use of Wyrdkeys, Wyrdgates, and Wyrdstone.
Dorian, who has been secretly searching the tomb for answers about his own magic, overhears the conversation. The revelation that Celaena is Aelin, that Chaol knew, and that Chaol kept it from him devastates him. When Aedion and Chaol discover Dorian listening, Dorian confronts them, his uncontrolled ice magic chilling the stairwell as he accuses Chaol of distrust and betrayal.
Chaol insists he kept the truth hidden to protect Aelin, Dorian, and anyone who might oppose the king. Chaol also explains that Aedion and his allies may know how magic was suppressed and how to reverse it, which could save Dorian. Dorian refuses to join their conspiracy, promises to keep their secrets, and leaves while turning his cold magic inward around his heart.
Afterward, Aedion leaves through a secret exit and meets Ren and Murtaugh near the docks. Aedion reflects that the king’s rings, Wyrd power, weapons, and possible alliance with witches confirm long-held suspicions of a larger war machine. Ren demands to know where Aelin is, but Aedion refuses, arguing that Ren and Murtaugh will receive information only as needed.
The three discuss rebuilding support for Aelin among surviving Terrasen loyalists. Murtaugh names possible allies, including Ravi and Sol of Suria, and mentions the devastation of Orlon’s old circle, Vernon Lochan’s survival, Lady Marion’s fate, and Elide’s uncertain whereabouts. Aedion orders them to approach Ravi and Sol first, seeing Ren and Murtaugh as the first fragile pieces of Aelin’s future court.
