Overview
Living as a solitary beachcomber, Zakalwe avoids attachment until a parktown girl’s murder triggers communal vengeance and his self-imposed exile. Months later Sma approaches, asking him to return for a mission reshaping an aristocratic order. She reveals they have found Livueta, compelling Zakalwe to accept and rejoin the Culture’s work.
Summary
A nameless man—Zakalwe—lives alone in a fixed shack among dunes, beachcombing and selling flotsam to a shifting “parktown.” He shuns leaving marks, avoids entanglement, and pays a visiting woman for company while speaking in his own language about past wars, guilt, and a mysterious Chair and Chairmaker.
In parktown, a dealer’s shy daughter shows him quiet kindness, watched by a jealous youth. When the youth confronts Zakalwe, Zakalwe subdues him without injury and returns to his hut. Soon after, the girl flees to Zakalwe’s shack; he rejects her and bolts the door. The next night she is found raped and murdered; a mob comes for Zakalwe. He escapes, captures the jealous youth, and stages a public confrontation on a dune, repeatedly disarming him and sparing him, before burning his own shack.
The community withdraws; trade dwindles, the visiting woman stops coming, and Zakalwe lives in isolation by the shack’s ruins. Months pass in silence and routine. One morning he sees Diziet Sma seated by the sea. She asks him to return for a mission to guide aristocrats “into the next millennium” from within.
Zakalwe resists deflection and demands clarity. Sma tells him they have found Livueta. The name strikes him deeply, shifting his outlook from receiving the sea’s gifts to seeing the ocean as a path away. Moved by the revelation and the promise of being “properly” paid—emotionally, not materially—Zakalwe agrees to hear the plan and to come back.
