After their capsule is attacked during extraction, Zakalwe and Tsoldrin Beychae crash on a wooded hilltop among ancient stone instruments. Zakalwe’s beloved plasma rifle is fused by an effector strike; he laments the lost seconds persuading Beychae and recalls Ubrel Shiol drawing a concealed pen-laser at Beychae before fainting, confirming her as an embedded assassin-jailer.

Surveying damage and comms silence, Zakalwe discards the ruined rifle and assesses their odds: one suit, a pistol, a wrecked capsule, no contact from the Module. Beychae identifies the site as the famed Srometren Observatory, likely a beacon that makes them easier to find, possibly by Governance/Humanists. They discuss diverting to neutral Habitats in the Impren System if rescue had succeeded.

Their talk turns to looming war. Zakalwe insists conflict is imminent but avoidable—“war is a long cliff”—while Beychae questions the Culture’s objectivity on terraforming, machine sentience, and cross-species policy. Zakalwe concedes uncertainty about the Culture’s purity of motive yet trusts its restraint; he urges Beychae to accept his symbolic power and responsibility, warning that inaction is itself a decision with consequences.

Exploring the observatory, they examine a petrified tree-stump “maze.” Using the suit’s strength, Zakalwe lifts its stone cover to reveal a ridged cone puzzle. He reflects on the tree rings as layered sentences and prisons of time. Rechecking the silent emergency beacon, he predicts Governance will interrogate rather than kill him and advises Beychae to claim coercion.

Zakalwe apologizes for Shiol; Beychae, wounded by the deceit, doubts whether happiness can come without it. Zakalwe notes Culture longevity options, then spots an incoming aircraft. He seals his helmet, draws his pistol, and tells Beychae to flee or hide as he prepares to fight the approaching force.
