Overview

The Enkidu’s crew determines that Imir is breathable but ecologically barren, forcing Gembel and the others to plan a tiny, fragile colony built from limited genetic stock. Esi discovers strange, complex signals from beneath the planet, and Halena traces them to a region that may contain something buried. Holt chooses the first colony site near the signal source, accepting danger because the faint possibility of Ancient aid may be humanity’s only hope beyond mere survival.

Summary

Captain Heorest Holt directs the Enkidu’s surviving crew to solve the problem of making Imir habitable. The ship can manufacture small and medium projects, but its major factory bays are gone, so Engineering focuses on repairs while Science and Security work out what kind of colony might actually survive. Surveys confirm that Imir’s terraforming is incomplete: engineered microbes, plankton, and lichens are safe but limited, leaving a world with air but almost no usable ecosystem.

Gembel converts a chamber into an Imir test environment and tries to adapt the Enkidu’s limited genetic library of plants and livestock to the planet’s chemically difficult soil. Imir’s short days, harsh seasons, dangerous tides, and unsuitable coasts further narrow the settlement options. Gembel proves unexpectedly valuable in designing a minimal crisis ecosystem, while Halena manages the planetside survey and Olf keeps the deteriorating ship livable.

Esi Arbandir privately investigates Imir for signs of Ancient technology and calls Holt to hear an odd pattern hidden in the planet’s background static. Esi doubts herself, fearing she is seeing meaning in noise, but Holt hears a real signal. Key Crew later studies the recordings and concludes that the transmissions are complex, non-repeating, unlike any known Ancient or human signal, and probably meaningful, though completely unreadable.

Halena narrows the possible source to a plain near a river and a range of hills, where geophysical scans may show something buried. Halena argues that survival should remain the priority and that future generations can investigate once the colony is secure. Holt is torn between avoiding danger and pursuing the slight chance that the buried source might provide the salvation Imir otherwise lacks.

Holt announces a carefully limited first wave of colonists selected from the cargo roster for essential skills, because the Enkidu can feed only a small group until Gembel’s ecosystem can produce a harvest. He orders the patched heavy lifter Urshanabi prepared and reveals that the colony site will be near the mysterious signal source. The crew recognizes the decision as risky but shares Holt’s need for hope, and Esi compares the place to Pandora.
