Summary
After Nezha’s retreat, the Southern Army sweeps into Arlong amid uneven evacuations. Rin orders disciplined plunder prioritizing Hesperian quarters and centralizes food, while Kitay urges minimal bloodshed. Captured Republican soldiers are publicly humiliated, signaling the regime’s dominance.
At the harbor, Rin contemplates burning the fleeing Hesperian fleet but, persuaded by Kitay, lets them go to avoid civilian deaths and future escalation, intending to strike later. She moves to the palace, finds it stripped, and surveys the Yin family’s fallen legacy. Reports confirm Lady Saikhara’s suicide amid public fury, and Rin reflects on the House of Yin’s profiteering and collapse.
Exploring the palace’s relics, Rin tries on a purported Red Emperor helmet, reclaims her Speerly-forged sword, and discovers the Imperial Seal’s case empty, deducing Nezha took it. She rejects sitting on Vaisra’s throne, viewing Arlong as a temporary base, and steels herself for the monumental task of restoring order across Nikan.
Alerted to activity in the Hesperian quarter, Rin leads a raid on Sister Petra’s laboratory. After breaching a booby-trapped basement, she destroys Petra’s lightning device and captures her. Petra boasts that her technology nullifies shamanic power and that the Gray Company will perfect it, spreading order by eradicating “Chaos.”
Refusing a simple execution, Rin straps Petra down and force-feeds her poppy seeds to open the spiritual bridge. With the Phoenix’s aid, Rin drags Petra into the Pantheon, forcing her to confront the gods’ reality. Petra’s faith collapses; when Rin returns to her body, Petra is alive but broken, babbling and incapacitated—Rin’s vengeance complete.
