Chapter 42
Overview
Cassie and Dean wait as the FBI hunts Christopher Simms, debating Daniel Redding’s strategy and Dean’s place in it. Dean admits conflicted feelings, then news arrives: Simms is arrested with a kill kit, preventing another murder. Cassie questions Redding’s knowledge of her mother. Michael openly declares his feelings, and Lia and Sloane interrupt a near-kiss with a celebratory dance.
Summary
Cassie waits on the stairs as the FBI searches for Christopher Simms, fearing Redding’s promised new body. She replays the case: Clark chose Emerson, another apprentice killed her, and that killer then chose Trina Simms. Cassie concludes Redding orchestred apprentices and targeted Dean, weaponizing Trina to draw Dean in.
Dean joins Cassie. They analyze Redding’s endgame—Dean as heir or executioner—and whether escalating apprentices were meant to force Dean into lethal self-defense. Tension mounts as the phone rings. Cassie presses Dean about his feelings; Dean admits he feels something but doubts it’s enough.
Michael arrives with news: Briggs’s team arrests Christopher Simms outside a coffee shop, finding zip ties, a hunting knife, a cattle brand, and rope in his truck. The team’s deductions prevent another victim. Cassie reflects that their choices—from confronting Redding to Lia and Sloane’s insights and Dean’s visit to Trina—led to this save.
Alone outside, Cassie wrestles with throwing away Rose Red lipstick tied to her mother’s murder and fixates on how Redding knew about her past. Michael counsels her away from fear and openly states he wants her and chooses to want her, contrasting with Dean’s uncertainty. Cassie wavers, nearly choosing Michael.
Lia blasts music and interrupts, and Sloane, buoyed for the first time in days, chimes in with cheerful noise facts. Lia drags Cassie and Sloane onto the lawn to celebrate catching the bad guy, pausing the love triangle and giving the team a brief respite.
