Overview
The Gilded Blade follows the Hawthorne circle as Avery Grambs vanishes under strict secrecy, leaving Jameson Hawthorne with only a cryptic infinity-marked note and a trail leading back to Prague, Alice Hawthorne, and a hidden world of dangerous games. As Jameson searches for Avery, Grayson Hawthorne and Lyra Kane investigate old family secrets, while Gigi and Savannah Grayson are drawn into their own hunt through Louisiana, London, and the shadowy influence of the Devil’s Mercy.
The novel centers on puzzles, inheritance, power, and the question of who gets to shape the world from behind the scenes. Its intertwined mysteries test loyalty, identity, chosen family, and the cost of ambition as old Hawthorne designs collide with a secret order known as the Gilded Blade.
Plot Summary ⚠️ Spoilers
Avery Grambs disappears after leaving Jameson Hawthorne a note insisting she is not missing and warning that the press cannot find out. The note bears a lemniscate, sending Jameson to Prague, where he once learned that his presumed-dead grandmother, Alice Hawthorne, was alive. Alisa Ortega coordinates containment while Jameson searches hidden Hawthorne passages and learns that Alice belongs to a secret triad organized around the roles of Watcher, Hand, and Judge.
At the same time, Rohan is hired by Jameson to locate Avery by finding Duchess Zella, a powerful figure tied to the Devil’s Mercy. Rohan recruits Savannah Grayson and Gigi Grayson through their desire for answers about their father, Sheffield Grayson, and about Brady Daniels, whose sponsor is Zella. The trail leads to St. Adelaide Parish in Louisiana, where Brady’s ties to Calla Thorp, the Woman in Red, reveal a pattern of calla lilies, fleur-de-lis symbols, and candidates being marked for something called the Crucible.
Lyra Kane and Grayson investigate Lyra’s childhood abduction and the death staged around a man assumed to be her father. Files reveal aliases, erased crime-scene details, and a sketch of a man who resembles Lyra. Revisiting 947 Onomo Crescent, whose name hides Monoceros, Lyra remembers a white calla lily, blood, and the kidnapper’s promise that a woman would come for her. Hawthorne House clues then reveal Alice vanished on March 5, 1967, returned after nearly a year, and received from Tobias Hawthorne a secret box and twelve keys for the months she was gone.
Jameson and Xander Hawthorne follow Tobias’s old love-letter game for Alice from Prague to Tuscany and then to the Devil’s Mercy. Shapes hidden in villas and suites form the Mercy’s sigil, while alchemical clues point toward a crucible. Jameson bargains with Bowen Johnstone-Jameson for entry to the Mercy, accepting a dangerous future favor. Inside, he finds Alice’s warning to go home and Zella’s clue that a north wind is blowing, confirming that the Mercy is only one piece of a larger structure.
In Louisiana, Gigi is chosen by Calla for a test of potential but refuses. Eve, however, accepts an invitation to the Gilded Blade and shoots Mattias Slater as part of her departure. Helena Thorp explains to Gigi that the Gilded Blade works through cycles: a Candidate may become Watcher, then Hand, then Judge; others become the surrounding web. She reveals the older Crucible involving herself and Vega, exposes Knox Landry as Orion Thorp’s son, and warns that the next Judge may be brutal. Nora, trained by the Kyrie, later explains that the Kyrie train Watchers and can check a compromised Judge. She insists the current Omega must not become Judge.
The Hawthornes gather intelligence at Hawthorne House. Alice’s poem suggests she chose love and influence over overt power, and Jameson realizes Alice may have shaped Tobias’s genius and games. Constellation clues link Lyra, Aquila, Vega, and Monoceros, while Lyra learns the devastating truth: Katalin Aquila Reyes, the Omega, was her biological mother, and Tom was her uncle, not her father. Katalin had chosen the Crucible over Lyra, and a threatening note confirms that Lyra was not the one chosen now.
Rohan’s ambitions peak in London. Savannah infiltrates the Mercy to reach Zella, then returns coldly, transferring her trust fund to ensure Rohan can become Proprietor while severing their personal bond. Rohan takes the Mercy’s cane from Alastair and becomes its new ruler, but the victory feels empty. When Jameson, Grayson, Xander, and Toby reveal that Avery, Eve, and a third Candidate are in the Crucible, Rohan chooses Savannah over power. He later bargains with Zella, believing Savannah’s life is at stake, and signs away the Mercy to her. Nora then reveals the manipulation: Savannah was never a Candidate. The third Candidate is Freya, Nora’s half sister and Kyrie heir.
Tobias’s hidden planetarium points the team to Vantage, a Scottish estate controlled through the Mercy. Rohan leads Jameson, Grayson, Xander, and Toby into its sea caves, but Zella separates Grayson and Xander from the deeper rescue attempt. Underground, Jameson is captured and confronted by Emily Laughlin, alive and serving as the true Watcher while impersonating Eve. Emily taunts Jameson and Grayson, but Alice intervenes, gives Jameson an antidote, and orders the brothers to leave, insisting Avery is where she must be and that they must trust her.
In another chamber, Katalin confronts Rohan and Toby, revealing that Hannah Rooney twice refused the Crucible and died an ordinary death. Nora has planted explosives to destroy the caverns during the anointing, intending to kill the Ascendants, the Kyrie leadership, and the Candidates. The final Crucible becomes catastrophic: Freya threatens Avery, Eve drinks from a marked chalice and appears to die, Katalin kills Freya for drawing blood, Alice completes her final rite and dies, and Toby shields Eve as explosions begin. Vantage collapses in what the public is told is a natural disaster.
Rescue teams under Bowen’s covert control recover Grayson and Jameson alive from a reinforced passage. Jameson refuses to stop digging until he finds Avery; Oren emerges from a hidden metal refuge and lifts Avery out alive. Bodies recovered include Emily, Alice, Freya, Agnes, Toby, and an apparently dead Eve, though later clues reveal Eve survived. Rohan and Nora also survive, but Rohan initially chooses to disappear before returning to Savannah. He admits he signed away the Mercy to save her, and the two reconcile on their own terms.
In the aftermath, Gigi helps end the secrecy around Sheffield Grayson’s death and supports Slate as he is named Eve’s heir. Avery’s eulogy at Eve’s funeral hints that Eve is alive, a truth confirmed when Avery and Eve scatter Toby’s ashes together. Nora arrives with the motto Nature abhors a vacuum and proposes reshaping the Kyrie and the web without killings or another Crucible, with Avery visible, Eve in shadow, and Zella part of the new order. Lyra sells Alice’s black opal ring to save Mile’s End and reaffirms the family that raised her, while Jameson, recognizing that this new web is not his to lead, proposes to Avery. She accepts by moving the infinity ring to her left hand.

Themes
The Gilded Blade turns its sprawling mystery into a study of power: who inherits it, who manipulates it, and who must decide whether to destroy or remake it. Across the Hawthornes, the Graysons, and the women of the Blade, Jennifer Lynn Barnes keeps returning to the cost of playing games whose rules were written generations before the players were born.
- Power as inheritance and corruption. The Gilded Blade begins as a secret network of women checking abusive power, but its rituals—Watcher, Hand, Judge, Crucible, Kyrie—have hardened into violence and control. Alice’s poem, the fleur-de-lis, the Mercy ledgers, and the Vantage chambers all show institutions preserving themselves through secrecy. Rohan’s rise and abdication from the Devil’s Mercy mirrors this: he gains a throne only to discover that true power has made him less free.
- Choice versus manipulation. Nearly every character is caught inside someone else’s “cascade.” Alice nudges Tobias, Avery, Jameson, Nora, and the Hawthornes toward outcomes she cannot fully control. Katalin chooses the Crucible over Lyra; Hannah refuses it for Avery; Gigi refuses Calla’s invitation; Eve accepts one. The book asks whether a choice remains meaningful when engineered by others—and answers, cautiously, that refusal, loyalty, and sacrifice can still be acts of selfhood.
- Family as blood, bond, and burden. Lyra’s discovery that Katalin, not Darby, gave birth to her reframes identity without replacing the family who raised her. Grayson choosing Lyra, Gigi and Savannah protecting each other, Toby dying over Eve, and the Hawthorne brothers searching together all argue that family is less a biological fact than a repeated act of devotion. Even damaged bonds—Savannah and Rohan, Knox and Calla, Slate and Eve—reveal how love can both save and wound.
- Games, stories, and symbols as moral maps. Puzzles are not decorative here; they are how history speaks. Constellations, keys, fairy tales, alchemy, lilies, rings, and hidden rooms encode trauma and truth. The Orpheus motif becomes crucial when Jameson must leave Avery behind and trust her. By the end, Avery’s “different kind of fairy tale” suggests a future where games need not be traps: they can become doors.
- Survival and reinvention. The phoenix image hovers over Eve, Avery, and the broken Blade itself. Vantage burns and collapses, but something survives: not the old order, but the possibility of a new web built without murder. The final proposal, made with Avery’s infinity ring, closes on continuity rather than certainty—love as the one game they choose freely.
